Subject: Sulfasalazine and pregnancy

I'm on methotrexate but my doctor has just started me on sulfasalazine as I want to try and get pregnant (so obviously need to get off the metho as thats a big no no). I have to wait about 6 months for the sulfasalazine to be fully working and for the right dose to be reached. Then he is going to reduce my methotrexate so that i'm no longer on it. I then have to wait 3 months just taking the sulfa then hopefully I will be able to get pregnant with my first baby. I'm very scared! Its meant to be safe to take all through pregnancy - I just hope they are right. Afterwards they want to put me back on the metho. I just hope I can concieve after having to go through all this. Anyone had experience of this?

Donna welcome , im on mTX and been on sulpha, we r all different and tolerate different meds to one another, sulfa made me quite unwell..... ok i understand what the docs want to do..... I would have to HUNT down all the info i can regards taking sulpha whilst being pregnant!...I thought it was a strong DMARD..... Im sure this meds WILL NOT affect your fertilitly ok....others have fallen pregnant , but have to come offf meds..... anyway, being nosy, may I ask what type of Arthritis u have, How bad it is? iT is obviously bad as u r on MTX.... but is it possible that U cld stop all those Immune suppressants, and wait till u got it all out of your system, Try for your baby, I never had anytrouble with artha(arthrits) we call it artha lol....I was physically fine in my pregnancies...all 6 of them...no pain at all.... however, my real Pain began only 6 years ago.... and im in a messs LOL......anyway look into it, I wouldnt just lightly take any ones word for it, that your baby will be fine whilst u take sulphs.....aftert all we r told to only take Parcetamol during pregnancy.......take care Jill

My rheumy has said my artha is too bad to go drug free (i have joint replacements already so I guess you could say its fairly bad). They have said i would just flare causing me major problems and that then I wouldnt concieve anyway. I suffer with rheumatoid arthritis. I have now seen a rheumy nurse who has told me it is considered the safest med to be on while pregnant. Worried still thou.
