Hi Vicky
I have'nt done a home course but started my degree when i was 40 I am 50 now and would do more study at home if i wanted to. I think anything that is a focus for you and takes your mind of health problems can only be a good thing. I am rarely working now and spend time doing arts and crafts at home and hopefully will be doing some craft fairs if i am able. As for feeling tired, I feel the same but seem to find energy when I am doing something I am really interested in. All the best : )

Hi vicky did a part time. Course 4hrs week. But all the work was done at home and studying in the librarey. If your really interested in your subject as jenny says you find the energy to do it. Hardest for me was the typing of assignments. Made my hands hurt also at at computer made back ache but the good thing was that you could stop and have a break when needed cos I was at home. So I say go for it. Wish you well XXXXXXXX

Hi Vicky
I am doing my courses from home, I can no longer work through health problems, but because i have always worked with people, i am now taking a advanced course in counselling. Have already passed first course, and like they say, you can always stop and start to suit yourself, this is why i am doing the counselling course. Good luck

Hi Monica thats what I did what form of counselling are you studying. I got an advanced diploma in Person centered counselling, studied over three years . was hard physically especially having to do the counselling and supervision on top of course work.
I did start off studying psycodynamic counselling in the begining for a year but decided that i was more in tune with person centred counselling. suited me better. Throughly enjoyed it. xx Lynne

Thanks for all your advise. I have now spoken to northumbria about re-starting ym llb from home (in 2005 i was raped and couldnt carry on, i left took time out then didnt want to leave home so started my teaching then arthur struck and had to leave that too) now though i am mentally bored. The lady was very nice and said i have 6 years to finish in which is great. Im going to enrol in the feb intake though as winter is not a good time for me. Thanks again for all your advise

Good for you. it does help to keep your head busy. Get a letter from your rheumy (photo copy it) always handy to show people. send a copy to your tutor at uni. they will then be able to give you extra time to put your assignments in, especilaay if your having a flare up.
I can understand you not wanting to return to your course after you've suffered such a trauma. and having arthritis on top is a major blow,,, so difficult to get your head around... sounds like your ready for the challenge now though. Good luck and take care.

Hi Lynn
My First course took me a year, i did Psychic development, i do card readings, and intuitive counselling. With this i decided to go a bit further, so i have just finished my third part to a six part course in advanced counselling. I do not really know if i will do another course, i will see. I have been told to phone the red cross when i have finished, also i thought about samaritans or solace, for people with mental health, i will know what do when the time is right. But i just love working with people.

I wanted to do samaritans.... but they told me to come bk 5 years time(this was years ago) never bothered, cos never felt I cld take on everyones worries, however, I am a good listerner, and wld love to do counselling, ive been thru enough to qualify.... but things do tend to dtay with me, also an old m8 of mine her mum did samaritan work, and altho she did that for years, it took its toll......... If I did counselling, id have to do face to face, over a phone where ppl put phone down and tell u they r goona commit suicide wld make me sick with worry..... I know u get support during being with the samaritans...mb im too sensitive for an importnat job like that........goood luck to alkll that do, we all need ppl that can do that type of counselling....

Hi Lynn
I am now on the register of psychic development. I have been given a number also the code of conduct and practice. I have no clients as yet regarding this as i am waiting to finish my advanced course in counselling. Then i will combine the two. I do card readings for my friends and family, or any body else but i do not charge anything as yet. I have been given the forms to join the association of Holistic and complemantary practitioners, but as yet have not, i must do this when i start charging people, along with the counselling for insurance purposes. So once i have passed this i will do something about this. I do not really know what to do as yet. Will be lead.

Hi all I has to retire from doing counselling. Took to much out if me. I used to counsel for a chariety and I also counselled students for free for a university to gain experience. Was a wonderfully experience but very intense. Need the supervisor to talk through clients work. Was also insured too had to keep insurance going when I finnished for three years after. That's how long your clients can make a complaint against you. Not that I had any just highlighting it for those who are thinking of going into counselling.
Need to look after my health now so I don't counsel anymore although I am still licences to do so.

That's interesting I did not know you had to have supervision but it does make sense. You get another prespective plus you can bounce things off them keeping you on track so to speak.

Hi Lynne
Once i have passed i was thinking of doing counselling privately, so i can see people when i want to, but i also think i will go for solace or samaritans. I have worked with the public for so long, did a short psychology course some years ago now. But every little bit helps. But i do know what you mean when working with the public, it is very draining. Keep well

Hi monica
My health was begining to suffer.. just the physical effort to get there every week was draining. Because when you have clients depending on you .. and they are in a fragile emotional state..you can't let them down by canceling.. even if you are having a flare up. They may not be able to tolerate breaks in sessions.
The emotional side I could cope with it was my Arthritis and the fatigue that took its toll. This was before my hip replacement to. so was in great deal of pain. Could not take pain killers before seeing clients cos i needed my head clear for them. These are things you may consider before taking on clients. offering to be there for clients it a serious commitment both physically and mentally. in the beginnig you are perhaps their only life line and their emotional need can be quite great, and breaks in session may not be well tolerated. they have a need for consistency as you have probably read in your studies.. I don't know how ill you are with arthritis but these are some of the things you need to consider. Good luck in your studies. xx

Hi monica
Im interested to know about your studies in counselling. You said you study from home. how do you practise your counselling skills then..do you meet other students to practise your counselling skills, As a counselling student we still had clients under tight supervision. to qualify to be a counsellor we had to have completed 40hrs of counselling. I did my course at a well know university. We had supervision each week by an independant counsellor that was not affiliated to the uni so was not biased when she submitted a report of our counselling abiliteis.. Do you have a supervisor?

Hi Lynne
When i finished my first course, i thought about the counselling, so i phoned the BSY up, this is who i do my course through, it is like the open university, you get all your course work through the post. Anyway, i asked if i could do the advanced counselling course, they asked me if i had done the basic, i told them no, they asked what i had been doing through the years as a career. I told them i had done nursing, i started of with a years training, but because of the back i had to give it up, so i went as an auxiliary, still doing in house training, and some lifting, which i thought i would not have to do, anyway i mentioned i had taken a psychology course, all being a short one, i had my nvq in business and admin, through college, also i had worked as a civil servant having to pass english, maths, and some other tests, i cannot remember, and that i was a customer advisor in employment, in benefits which entailed quite alot of other things, counselling was one of them. They stated at work, when i was there to do counselling, so i thought why not. I get the questions, plus a detailed programme on six courses, one first, then when i have read one, i get the questions for course one with course two, and so on. I have to get other information on different pyschologists myself, i think this is part of the course to see what you can find and learn about yourself, which i find interestings, I like A Adler, i feel he was a very open person, go with the flow type, not a freud person at all. So this is what i do, they said i was experienced enought to go for the advanced. So i did. Wooof, long winded or what, sorry.

Hi monica not heard of BSY but i guess there are a lot of training agencys out there. I like person centered counselling by carl rogers. very intuative and flows naturally. although we were required to study many other forms of counselling and practitoners such as michael jacobs pycodynamic. Also dave mearns and brian thorn well know brittish practitioners and authours on person centered counselling. They brought Rogers work up to date. could go on but wont guess this is not forum for counselling so will leave it here.xx nice chatting with you
