Hello there. I have suffered from RA since i was young (i am now 23) and have been told by my doctor that i would benefit from getting my thumb joints fused. i was wondering if anyone else has had this kind of proceedure done? i would be interested to hear about what happens after surgey and the outcome i.e. if it was beneficial or not. Look forward to hearing from someone :)

Fusing my left thumb is also an option for me. I am curious what people who went through it have to say.

Hi Nicholas,
I have now had my thumb fused (since posting the message), and it has been great. My thumb no longer looks deformed, and there is no pain or swelling. i also have a wider and firmer grip. the operation was well worth it.

Hi Alison,I am 28yrs old and have had arthritis for 10 years. I am also on the waiting list, to have a thumb operation. I wanted to know, how long the procedure took, and how long you had to wait to get an appointments. Would love to hear from you. Thanks

Hi Amia,

Well the operation took about 1.5 hours. I had a general anesthetic (instead of an arm block) which meant that i had to spend a couple of hours in recovery. So i ended up spending pretty much all day at the hospital (from 11am to bout 8pm). My op was booked in about three months in advance.

Do you know how long it will be before you have your operation? I hope you wont have to wait too long.

If you have any other questions, just let me know and i will answer them the best that i can!

Best of luck,
Alison
