I'm confused. I've been diagnoses with osteoarthritis in my left hip and knee. I had the ex-rays to confirm. I was sent to a specialist who said it wasn't OA at all but a muscle in my lower leg that was causing the problem. I can't go along with this I know the difference between muscle pain and other pain. The pain is getting progressively worse and in 12 months I've gone from being able to walk 3/5 miles a day to being on crutches to get around. Can anyone tell me if pain in the outside lower leg (not a knee joint) is OA ? don't know what to do now as can't get to see a Doctor because of the current situation. I've just been prescribed codeine, nothing else.

Hi Wean. No wonder you are confused. I have rheumatoid arthritis and was told I had Osteo-arthritis in both ankles, I then had dreadful pain in my shin and like yourself I had to use crutches, I asked for an MRI scan and it was discovered I had a fracture in my shin and the consultant said it is not OA and that I need an ankle replacement, even although I was told the x-rays showed osteo arthritis.. It is a difficult time to get tests done but I think you need to get an MRI scan to see what is going on. What did the specialist suggest for the muscle pain if that's what he thought it was? Like yourself I had been told it was OA from the x-rays when it wasn't but an MRI will show a more detailed picture of your leg. Have you tried some supports on your leg until you know for sure what is is? Good luck with it and hope you get some help soon

Hi there, pain from your hip or back can cause this kind of pain. I have back and hip problems and suffer with similar pain. Lucy is right in saying you need an mri scan done. It is hard sometimes getting the right diagnosis on guess work. You will have to keep bothering your GP until you get answers that you are happy with. Good luck with it all.

Thank you both for your replies. The pain is severe down the side of my shin, is it the 'Tibia' - ? the specialist told me to do excercises with one of those stretchy elastic thingies, which made it so much worse, I had to give up. The pain has now gone into my ankle too. I will get it checked out again as soon as I can.

I would try to rest up and not aggravate the problem. It is so difficult at this time to get the correct diagnosis with all that is going on. Take care and hope you get sorted soon
