Subject: Can anyone help

Hi, I am 55yrs and have been having problems for over a year. I have seen a consultant twice and all he has given me is amitriptylene and nabumetone. I know it takes a long time to diagnose arthritic conditions but I am at the end of my patience now as medication is not helping much. The pain has settled now to different places. Both ankles have big swellings over ankle bone, (not fluid) Dr said he didn't know what it was!! My feet are very sore and I can't walk too far. I get pins and needles round my heels. My hands (fingers) are always sore and if I am not using them they stiffen up and its REALLY sore to bend them. My wrists have the same swelling as my feet only smaller. I get a sort of pins and needles at the base of my hands. Both shoulders, although right is worse, also pain goes down arm in to the muscle. My arm reach is very limited. Is anyone still reading this book? Please does anyone know what might be going on. Great place to come for some help, and it's good to know you are not alone.

Hi Sandie
I've not been coming here long but everyone seems really great, I'm 28yrs and was diagnosed 2yrs ago now with Rheumatiod Arthritis...took a while as Doctors thought I was imagining it!!! My advice would be to keep on at the Doctors, don't let up!! What have we all paid our National Insurance for after all??? ;))

hi sandy keep a record of how u feel take it with u to doc. but dont give up this is a nasty complaint but with the right meds things r a lot better so keep going they seem to like to rule every thing else out before admitting its arthritus and then there r so many types it takes a while to sort out which from what i have read on here so stick with it dont live with the problem keep going back till sorted know how rotten it is when feet r bad had trouble with mine last week and wanted to cut them off

Hi Sandie, I am 53 and mine started a year ago with a swollen wrist and what I thought was a frozen shoulder. The doc I saw told me it was wear and tear, and gave me codydramol pain killers. Next my lower back went at work so I went bck and he told me the same.
It wasnt long before my knee swollen, and this time I asked around the village to find out who was the best doctor at my surgery, and it took me 2 weeks to get in with him.
From then its all history he was as sharp as a tack, and within a couple of months I was diagnosed.
I would suggest you do the same, the doc you saw doesn't strike confidence in me at all, and its your body and you that has to put up with the pain

Hi Sandie

U must ask your GP for a referal to a Rhumatologist, they will take u seriously, asl your Gp wldnt know much at all, after all they are just a general Practitioner...Pleas get a refeal asap...u need to be put on the correct meds... amitrip wont help, that is only a a nerve painkiller, they dont work 4 me, the gals in here are correct, given u sound advice, def seems to me u have some Inflamatory Arthritis going on... U need some blood taken to find out the inflamation rate going on, however, ihave Infmaatroy Arthritis, and when even if im in a flare up, my bloods dont show inflamation on occasions...Dont feel disheartened by that GP, this is a waiting game, does take ages b4 we get diagnosed, and meanwhile we have the pain spreading to all joints in the body.

Please stay in touch with this Forum, we r like a big family, and we get support, and tears and laughter too..so feel freee to come in here and SCREAMMMMMMMMMMMM !! I do

take lots care

When you are so stiff that you cannot hardly move thats when they will take you seriously.

Have a couple of Ibuprofen see if that helps

Thank you everyone very much for replying, I really appreciate it. I think I did say I have seen a consultant twice and twice he has given me the amitriptylene, which doesn't do much. I go to see him on 1st July and armed with everything you have told me and reading other people's stories I will be better prepared and I think after nearly a year it is time for some answers. So thanks all again I have renewed energy to face him. Hope you all have a good week, well not too much pain at least!!

Hi Christine,

It's a minefield of boggling information isn't it? And you'r right if they don't know how should we! My blood tests don't show the RA factor but I know that doesn't mean it's not there. Have your swellings gone away, they said mine probably wouldn't but didn't know what it was! Figure that out.

Normal ESR rates

Men 0 mm - 15 mm/hour
women 0 mm - 20 mm/hour
children 0 mm - 10 mm/hour

There are other causes of high rates of ESR other than RA
