Subject: Arthritic pain and its causes

I've had a half hip replacement and have been told I might need the operation re done in future if I wear out the acetabular rim by continuing to exercise as much as I do.. I think this is the cause of arthritis so wanted to ask if that's true and how does it start. Is it painful immediately or does arthritis develop over time? I'm not sure if I could go through another major op. in a few years time as I also have MS. Don't want to spend my last years in pain so thought I'd ask people who know what it's like to find out if I can exercise just now but slow down when I get early signs so as to prevent the onset of serious pain.i would then just use my wheelchair full time! Would love to know more to help me plan for future.

Hi Carola, I have rheumatoid arthritis and I had a half hip replacement over two years ago after I had a fall and I find if i walk too far (usually about a mile) it does get quite sore but after I've rested it feels ok again. I find swimming easier than walking now. I seem to remember reading that the half hip operation isn't recommended for people that do a lot of exercise but I have always enjoyed walking and swimming and I like to try and do it every day or so. I think we have to listen to our body and if it starts to hurt then it's time to rest. Good luck.

Thanks for replying. Don't want to be cheeky and ask your age Lucy but do you think hemiarthroplasty op. is based on expected longevity? I'm only 54 and am expected to make my 70's as MS has levelled off. Think I've been sold short and don't want osteoarthritis as well!

Hi Carola, I am 63 now and the accident happened while we were abroad on holiday and when I got back the consultant here said he would have done a full hip replacement. It was a bipolar hemiarthoplasty that I got. I would have preferred to have the full hip done as I don't know how long it will last and I am getting some pain now and there is also a difference in leg length.

Hi again Lucy. Think we must both be feeling annoyed about lack of consultation before op. I certainly wish I'd had options and implications explained to me. I had a unipolar implant but have read that your bipolar one was designed to lessen damage to cartilage. Really sorry you've got pain already. You're quite right, we have to listen to our bodies and not waste time feeling depressed about what's happened but it isn't easy! I wish you all the best.

Hi Carola, You are so right about the lack of information beforehand, I wasn't given a choice. Have you just recently had the operation? Have you been left with a leg length difference? I have to use inserts in one of my shoes as the leg they operated on is now a bit shorter. It worries me a bit that I may need it done again too, especially as I get older. Take care and wishing you all the best too xx

Hi Lucy, had my operation 18 weeks ago and yes one leg is now slightly longer than other one but apparently within acceptable limit. I have spoken in person to a lovely woman who's had 2 revisions on one hip and she's 76. She said the operation isn't nearly as traumatic as it used to be. I'm sure you'll be fine. Think my MS will make revision unlikely for me so will have to find a good physio to make sure this one stays pain free for 15 years.

Perhaps if we need it done again, Carola, things will have improved more. I suppose you will have exercises to do every day that the physio has given you and that should help. Take care x
