Subject: Psoratic arthritis

Hello,
I'm 36 and have had psoriasis for 20 years. I was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis about seven years ago. I have previously been on methotrexate and metrajet which worked well but I had horrific nausea and had to come off it. I've managed for the last 20 months on just the occasional ibuprofen but in the last few months my arthritis has flared up badly. It's mostly in my hands and feet. My skin is the best it's been in ages but my joints are beginning to be unbearable. I've been back to my rhumatologist and they have recommended steroid injection into the joint and sulfasalazine. I don't want the injection as before they have tried this and it did nothing for my joints and made my skin a hundred times worse. I'm also nervous that the drugs will make me feel really sick again. Just reading up on it all makes me feel sick. Really don't know what to do. Going to see my specialist nurse tomorrow with a list of questions and other options I have read up on. I feel I am only being offered two options and maybe not everything that is out there. The pain is really getting me down. Has anyone any advice? The rhumatologist I saw a few weeks ago didn't really seem interested when I refused the joint injection but I was absolutely devastated when it made my skin worse before. Thanks in advance xx

Hi Emily, Was it the methotrexate tablets that you were on? I know that a lot of people do have problems with them but find the methotrexate injections easier as they don't seem to cause the same sick feeling. I am on both mtx and sulfasalazine and have been on sulphasalazine for about fifteen years now and haven't had any problems with them. I have RA but some of the drugs we are prescribed are the same. You would get regular blood tests to make sure they are not causing any problems if you do take them. If you are not happy with taking them then do ask them what else they can offer. I do hope you get something to help you soon. xx

Hi Emily I've had Psoriatic arthritis for over 20 years.
I'm currently taking Methotrexate and Cimzia by injection. The methotrexate is much easier to tolerate by injection. It has been great for me over the years, it wasn't good in the beginning but I stuck with it.
I tried sulphasalazine but I was quite sick with it. Do some research and see what's out there, it is a case of trial and error
