Subject: thumb athritis
Hi fellow sufferers, I have, today, been to see the surgeon who "cut the nerves," in my right thumb last July. I am now, and have been ,in twice as much pain as pre-op. He told me that there was only a 90% success rate with that op, and I was just unlucky to be in the 10%. The next step is another op to remove completely the offending bone in my thumb. My faith in surgery has taken a knock and I wonder if anyone out there can advise me of alternatives such as counselling or hypnosis. Any advice will be gratefully received.

Hi Keith, my mum was the 1 in 10 whose shoulder replacement didn't work. It must be really disappointing for you, it was for her. You could ask your GP about counselling. I don't know about hypnosis for pain but some people swear by acupuncture. I practice Mindfulness meditation and it helps me.

hi Keith , we all deal with pain in different ways , not a fan of pain killers as they dont work , as for the opperation to remove bone , it may give you more mobility for some time but can grow back , in similar position with several of my joints my knee needs replacement but they may do a clean up of the joint & will have to wait & see what they recommend , the main thing is to have your arthritis under control & to stop the worst of the damage to the joints
