hi Trudy , what strenght codiene tablets you are taking , I take the 30/500mg but mostly because of leg alcers & not for my joints , you could ask for patches which may help you as for my hips , I use a difflam anti-inflammatory cream , & voltarol gel on other joints , the reason I use difflam is it helps bursitis in the hips & very good for soft tissue pain , other thing I use is tens m/c

Hi Trudy, Do you attend a rheumatologist? It sounds like you probably needs the drugs that are used for rheumatoid arthritis as the ones you mention won't protect your joints. It doesn't matter that it is sero negative as most people with sero negative still need the same drugs as people with sero positive as far as I know. I would speak to the hospital about getting the right treatment. Good luck x

Thanks for your replies Colin ,Lucy! i take 1gram of paracetamol and 60 codiene 4x daily with no effect. I am on methetrexate 20mg weekly and have had steriod injections every 6 months for 18 months now via rheumatologist. The steroids do work but dont last that long which is why i was after stronger pain relief. I may try the gel colin i will try anything at this moment! Thanks again

Hi Trudy, There are other drugs that they can give you, a lot of people with RA take a combination of drugs, I take meth, sulphasalazine and plaquenil as well as a biologic drug. I didn't find the methotrexate on its own very helpful. I really think you should ask about some of the other disease modifying drugs and although they are not painkillers as such I think you would feel less pain if your condition was controlled better. I was told by my rheumatologist if the methotrexate didn't bring relief then they would add something else and it is quite common to take all three together as they think this works better. The steroid injections are good but you need something the last longer and protects your joints long term.

Trudy , got to agree with Lucy & you need to add a biologic to help fight the RA , the one I am on they wont let sero-negitive have but you can have Anti-TNT like enbrel which should help as for painkillers , I dont take anything for RA & just for headaches & the problems I been having with leg ulcers , had RA for 20 years , the fentanyl patches do help & maybe worth you trying
