Subject: Intestinal Permeability - again.. not just arthritis
My wife has been sporadically eating Gluten free - and today admitted that she has noticed hot flushes happen each time she has it! She previous was diagnosed with some issues for PCOS a number of years ago. I had a strong hunch that Estrogen balance was involved with both previous and recent issues - and did some research to see if there was any studies out there. We know that a chemical called Zonulin is released in all people in response to gluten proteins. Just found this searching for estrogen - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25336505 Serum zonulin is elevated in women with polycystic ovary syndrome and correlates with insulin resistance and severity of an-ovulation. "Serum zonulin, a biomarker for gut permeability, is increased in PCOS women and correlates with insulin resistance and severity of menstrual disorders. It suggests that alterations in gut permeability may play a role in the pathophysiology of PCOS, and serum zonulin might be used as a bio-marker for both risk stratification and therapeutic outcomes in PCOS women." I am also sure that this also ties in long term with Osteoarthritis and bone resorption.
