I'm so sorry. It's such a shock when you first get diagnosed. You need to get a referral to a rheumatologist as soon as possible. There is a lot they can do to help. In the short term you can have a steroid injection (depo medrone), which will bring the inflammation down quickly.

Hi Margaret, I think you really need to ask your doctor to refer you to a rheumatologist so that you can get the right treatment for RA. It's only natural that you will feel emotional when you are in so much pain but if you get the right meds then you will feel better. Try not to worry too much about the operation as stress makes arthritis worse. Please come back on when you feel like it as there is always someone who will understand how you feel on here. I hope you feel better soon. Take care xx

Hi Margaret, so sorry you have been diagnosed with RA, I have it like so many people on here and this forum is absolutely essential to me for advice and support so I hope you will come back again and talk.

If you are taking naproxen it can upset your stomach so make sure you take it with food, or maybe g.p. will prescribe stomach protector.

I find eating certain foods really makes my hands swell and hurt, for me tomatoes and oranges are so bad even one tomato can make me flare up. I hope you get to see a rheumatologist soon, the sooner you are put onto the drugs the better. You will find there are people on here who are so knowledgeable about the illness it can really make a big difference to getting used to having this rubbish disease. Good luck Margaret and keep in touch on forum.

Oh and don't worry about where a drip can go, if not in your hand there are other places just as easy for them to use.
