Subject: New to this site

Hi, I am new to this site and just looking for advice and tips on how to help with the horrible pain I am in every day. I am 30 and last year was diagnosed with arthritis in my spine. I have been able to cope up until the last month. I take tramadol for my pain but it no longer helps. I have now started getting electric shock type pains in my back and keep losing the feeling in both my hands and feet. My mri last year showed as well as arthritis I have five badly damaged discs. As I am asthmatic, I cannot take naproxen as it caused difficulty with my breathing. I have a two year old son and keep feeling guilty as I cannot do the activities with him that my husband can. It is really getting me down as I am only just 30 and have the movement of a old person. I have just had to leave my full time job due to not being able to physically cope with it. I just would like to speak to others who are going through the same thing as I feel quite lost at the moment.

Hi Naomi, I am sorry to hear that you are suffering so much and at such a young age. It is horrible when you have constant pain. Have you been referred to a specialist or rheumatologist? If not then I think you should get you GP to refer you, as they can offer things that the GP can't. I suffer from Rheumatoid arthritis but am much older than you. I was over forty when I was diagnosed and I felt awful but with the right drugs I feel a lot better now so it is important that you see someone that knows what can be done to help you and the best medication to help. I have a small cushion that massages my back when it is really sore and I find it helps a bit, perhaps one of those wheat bags that go in the microwave might ease it a little or massage. I hope some others come on and offer their advice regarding pain killers. Take care and I hope you get something to make you feel better real soon. xx

Thank you, I am going back to the Dr tomorrow as I need something stronger to let me sleep at the very least. I will mention referral to consultant and going to request another MRI scan to see if any further damage has been caused.

Hi Naomi, I can sympathise with you all the way.
I have had back surgery for a slipped disc. You sound like you are being troubled by at least one disc. The electric shock feeling is a usually your nerve being pinched by the slipped disc.
It is just awful and I was like that for years before my surgery.
I believe you just need to see the correct Consultant. The Gp must send you to see a specialist. Be forceful!!

Last year my husband slipped a disc and waited three months bed bound for surgery he is so much better now.
Can I just say that this operation is not a miracle cure it stops the pain in the legs and the pins and needles but the actual back pain caused by the Osteo Arthritis stays. I have to say the lesser pain is liveable and you learn not to do the things that make it flare up.

You are young I was also in my 30s the trouble is people think this kind of Arthritis is for old people and it is just not so. I get cross when people say what do you expect at your age I am now in my 60s. I have lived a great life with OA and so will you. You will just do things a little different.
I am sure your husband and your son think you are a great mummy. As long as you are there that's all your son needs. You can be the parent that sits and reads and plays games on the floor or sofa sings along with him.
Naomi stay in touch and let us know how you get on at the Drs. If you need to know anything just ask if I can I will help.

Take care and Chin up xxx

Thank you for your comments.
My gp has said that he is requesting another MRI scan to see if I now need surgery. Hes also put me on a strong muscle relaxant and cocodamol, to be reviewed in a weeks time and see if I need stronger. I feel that my hips are getting particularly weak now and the knocking noise sounds louder. Ive been a bit out of it for last few days as my meds make me very sleepy.

Hopefully another MRI will show what is happening as I cannot continue to live with this horrible pain, just want to be able to move around without worry.

I shall keep updated on progress. Thank you again for advice and kind words xx

Hi Naomi I am also new to this site. I think it helps to talk to others going through the same thing. I am 33 and took arthritis out of the blue over 8 years ago now. When the doc 1st diagnosed me I totally blocked it out. I was only 24. I was silly to think that arthritis just affected old people. My 1st couple of years were terrible I too was moving like an old woman. I used to love getting dressed up and wearing heels. I lost weight cause I lost my appetite due to feeling down all the time. Sometimes I felt I would be better giving up. Now after trying lots of medication I got settled on a once weekly injection of enbrel. I finally felt normal and started getting my confidence back. I still have some bad days and plenty of tears but I'm not gonna give in to this disease. Plans this year are to try for a baby. I know it's not gonna be easy but will be worth it. I hope you feel better soon xxx
