Subject: AS flare - diet and exercise

Just want to share my experience of the last few weeks.

About 2 weeks ago I ate the first oatcakes (actually I ate 10 wheat free oatcakes) - the first for over 2 years - about 24 hours afterward I got tingling in my spine and surrounding tissue between my shoulder blades then spread to my ribs with an increase stiffness and soreness - like a straight jacket. I spent the last week in a mostly non flared crunchy state with the bones / muscles in my back, my ribs and neck feeling like they have a mixture of hardened cement and cornflakes.

I been doing lots of stretching to undo the stiffness - and last night forced myself to run 2 1/2 miles - this morning the remains of the flare seem to be even more dampened down and when I stretch I am getting some satisfying clicks as my bones unlock - especially my ribs and sternum :)

Also my hip that had been slightly sore from immobility this last week feels great this morning too!

Also my stomach / guts have been behaving very strange and overactive :-/ the last 2 weeks.

Sean, I think that proves what you already knew. There is definitely a connection with diet and inflammation.

Hi Sean, can I ask you were you checking to see if the oatcakes would interfere with your problems or didn't you realise they would. I am genuinely curious as you are so careful with your diet.

Hi Marlene - your dead right it was a sort of a test but sort of wishfull thinking!

Although I have been wheat free and corn / maize free for 22 years - I allowed oats for much of the time until recent years. I had been pretty good with them but then wanted to see if I got even better without them a few years back.

When I started my diet at age 26 - I allowed rye bread as well - and I really thrived on it - for a while.

I think I got my answer as to whether I'm better without in the last few weeks - the anwser is yes - I think I am much more stable without any type of gluten at all.

Made some nice scones with rice flour this weekend :). My wife is trying gluten free at the mo for her blood pressure and had one of her lowest reading in ages this morning at 130 / 90!

Been reading a bit the last few days and found this, showing some really good diagrams that show how gluten does its business in autoimmune disease -

Wow Sean, I was wondering why you were having such a big flare. I guess you will stay clear again. You must be so good a 26yr diet. In reality it sounds like you don't have much of a choice.

Fair play to your wife as well. It must be a lot easier to do it together.

Take care and leave those oat cakes alone LOL.
Enjoy those scones.
