Subject: Fasting (Ramadan Festival)

Hi Everyone I just wanted to share some info. I am muslim and am currently observing the month of Ramadan where we Fast from dawn till sunset. I suffer from R.A quite bad lots of joints affected and I have realised while I am fasting my joints feel much less swollen and sore and the inflammations seems less active.

My feeling is when food hits the stomach the intestines the wrong type of food the inflammation triggers off.

Fasting seems to help and calm inflammation and clean the body.

Thought Id share
Thanks guys for reading :)

hi Suz , think alot of us have found something similar but people react to different foods, some fruit & vegetables will cause myself problems & others its gluten & milk products , + what happens with antibiotics are all linked in & the doctors dont seem to come up with the answers & prefer to give us expensive biologic drugs which realy are not working for most of us

Hi Suz

I've read so many medical papers about this - it's been in the medical literature since at least 1924 - when physician John Turnbull did elimination diets with 100s of RA sufferers - it's all but ignored by 95% of "doctors". He was helping people for over 20 years - and his studies are all there to be read by today's docs. Dr. Gail Darlington cites his research in her 1986 studies in to elimination diets.

Fasting helps me, eating less helps me, eating less carbs helps me - but I have AS not RA. Eating no wheat or corn and less dairy has helped me for over 20 years.

Best searches online for anyone interested are -

- Vojdani rheumatoid arthritis
- Barbara Allen rheumatoid
- Alessio Fasano
- Larry Smarr human biome project

When you eat differently, the intestinal bugs "flora" change and its now pretty clear that our genes are not all that dictate our health - these bugs help signal which genes are active and inactive and how our immune systems react. Only a small percentage of people with the HLA-DR gene get RA - same with celiac for HLA-DQ gene.

What I find fascinating about Turnbull was that he identified that some patients reactions changes to different foods after elimination. In todays terms to me this highlights a leaky gut "intestinal permeability" where the immune system is constantly challenged by all proteins and lectins.

Some foods (gluten, nigella seeds) & bacteria can cause intestinal permeability. Some can improve permeability. The exposure our guts get leads to chaos as to which bugs thrive or die.

Btw - I think NSAID are a true double edge sword - great for immediate pain but punctures holes in our guts and makes us all sicker in the long run. have avoided any painkiller now (even for headache) for over a year.

I think we are at least 5 years aways from the point this feeds through to mainstream

Thank u both appreciate your comments.

Colin I am due to start TOX the one ur on monthly infusion but its been postponed as I am suffering from a leg ulcer at the moment and its taking its time to heal. Hope this treatment is helping you, is it helping your elbow joint? My elbows have been so sore lately cos of the damage from R.A.

Sean I understand what your saying, the info you have given is so interesting it makes me wanna cry if this R.A is linked with the intestinal flora and the Doc's aren't looking into it.

As I said fasting the body definitely makes a difference to this chronic disease.

Hi Suz, if you google Seamus Mullen he is an American celeb chef with RA. He is in remission like me, and has treated his RA with a diet that consists of fresh produce, fermented foods and low dose antibiotics.

Jackie - I'd never heard of Seamus Mullen.

I just googled him - and his diet approach is similar to the one Terry Wahls took for her MS but he allows some legumes - it is v low carb. Both had previously been in wheelchairs at some point their diseases. Thanks!
