Subject: Ferotonin levels?
Hi all, I've got RA and I'm on methotrexate, leflunomide and infliximab infusions. Despite being on iron for a year my GP has recently flagged it up that I'm anaemic. Apparently my ferotonin levels are high but I'm anaemic. My rheumy is going to run more tests but I just wondered if anyone else had experienced this. Its meant to be quite common with chronic illness. Thanks x

I had a period of low ferotonin levels but no anaemia. A course of iron tablets seem to have sorted it out. No-one ever really explained to me why this happens.

Thanks, no its a bit confusing. My ferotonin levels are really high but I'm anaemic. Even my GP seemed a bit puzzled and just blamed my RA and bounced it back to my rheumy. I was also told not to take any more iron.

I think you should check your iron, folate and Vit. B12

Hi Rachel High iron but low zinc can still cause anaemia - there are plenty of nutritonal studies that show that too much iron can inhibit zinc but suplementing with zinc increases the absorption of iron. With an automimmune disease zinc gets used up quickly as the body struggles to regulate self versus non-self - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19519463

I don't think people with arthritis absorb iron so well. At least that's what I've read and I've had to take iron tablets from time to time when my iron levels have been low.
