Hi Lol, all I can say is that Methotrexate terrified me, had lots of worrying nights but I have been fine on it, no problems at all.

I started on 2 tablets increasing each week till I got to 8, which I took on a Friday. Then I went onto doing my own injections, didn't like them so now am back on tablets, I take 10 each Friday.

Just make sure you are given folic acid to take every day except the day you take your tablets, this way if you get any sicky feeling it will take it away (I didn't get that feeling) I also take sulpha and plaquenil.I haven't noticed any side effects at all (touch wood hope I haven't jinxed myself)

My hands have been terrible for the past couple of weeks, but I think I have found the problem, I have been having an orange every day for the past two weeks because at moment oranges are soooo juicy and I love them. I woke up one morning and was hurting so much, that I just wondered why all of a sudden am I having so much pain (I have been quite well for a while now) I think the oranges were probably boosting my immune system and that's why my hands have been playing up, not had one now for two days and my hands are fine.

Lol just remember if you try methotrexate and find its not for you then you can come off them, and lets face it they do enough blood testing of us all, and the slightest problem will show up and you will be taken off them. Honestly I was really against taking it but I feel more at ease about it now.

Take care an try not to worry too much. How are you apart from the worry?
Julie

hi , if you go on methotrexate make sure they give you 5mg folic acid six days a week , it will sort out most the side effects from mtx including liver problems , but they will do bloods to check your liver monthly ( ALT )so dont worry , if its becomes raised they will stop it

Hi Lol, I remember feeling the same way as you but I have been ok on them. They will check your blood and if any liver problems they will stop them.

Julie, interesting what you say about oranges, I often wake up during the night with a very dry mouth and get up and eat an orange as they are so juicy but like yourself I have noticed my hands hurt afterwards.

Hi Rhona, I couldnt believe the difference it has made not eating or drinking orange juice. Yes they still ache a little but when I was eating oranges the knuckles actually looked really red and huge and were painful.

So its another thing I wont be eating along with tomatoes and strawberries which I love.

That's all the things I love too Julie. I have noticed when I eat cheese the roof of my mouth often itches, I think I will seriously have to look at my diet and eliminate quite a few things. I do notice when I eat sardines or salmon my joints feel a little better and if I haven't eaten all day I can even move better, not that I do that too often lol.

if the list of no-go foods turns to include chocolate - well that's another matter!!!!! just wouldn't be able to do that.

Like you Rhona I am going to look seriously at my diet and do some more researching.

Hi Julie and Rhona

I'm sorry had to post on this thread after readings both your posts I feel exactly the same with oranges and with other foods like drinking raw cow's milk the inflammation and pains seems worser. Like you Rhona I feel bit better when I eat fish and could move better AND when I haven't eaten all day either..

I have heard that with R.A we should have small meals which should help with digestion and that eases things for the R.A

Hi Julie / Rhona

Ther is a top Doctor at Kings College called Professor Jonatahn Brostoff that recommends an elimination diet for RA. he suggests using a Paleo Diet (Fish, meat, Veg, NO Starch Carbs, lowish fruit) as a start point...this is eched by the auto-immune protocol diet.

My main trigger foods are -

- Wheat
- Corn
- Cows Milk
- Milk Chocolate affects my eyes. But I still enjoy Dark Green & Blacks!
- Too many heavy carb meals causes bacteria to be fed again challenging the gut lining

Corn but especially Wheat can be the cause of other intolerences and raeations as it is proven to cause intestinal permeability. Eating grains causes the immune system to be challenged by complex proteins from the gut.

Suz - why did you try raw cows milk - do you still have other cows milk?

Hi Suz & Sean, Thanks for your posts. It certainly looks like diet plays a big part in RA and other inflammatory conditions.
