Subject: injection in neck

hi, I went to the hospital today , and i'm on the waiting list to have my elbow replaced, but i'm a little confused, the doctor said I need to have an injection into my neck before the operation, I can't remember if he said a week before the op or a day before, its been a long day and could not take in all he was saying to me, has anyone else had this ,

Hi sue, im due to have my elbow replaced too but my surgeon didn't mention anything about a injection on the neck or anything as yet im still discussing what type of surgery I want and with what type of implant, I thinking maybe he is talking about the local anaestic to numb the arm.

Do you know what type of implant they will be using for you?

hi suz
its a total elbow replacement im having, maybe it's a pre med , but I was so worn out and in pain, I could not take in what he was saying to me, I have to wait up to 18 weeks for the op, I see your discussing what type of implant you want, they have not asked me , so maybe when I get the date of the opp their ask me what I want, I hope your not in to much pain and all goes will with you op, I have both knees replaced in 2010 and that went well, just hope the elbow is as good

Hi Sue, Has the rituximab not helped you at all? I'm sorry to hear that you need your elbow replaced. It's hard enough taking in all that they tell you but when you are in pain it is even harder. It wouldn't do any harm to call the hospital and ask then to explain again what they intend doing as it will all be noted on your records. I hope it all goes well for you. Take care xx

Hi sue

I do get pain on moving the elbow up and down and it does not rotate quite deformed to be honest so hope the replacement will help daily activities. Im asking the surgeon which implant will last long as the prosthesis can wear out as im quite young for the op he said they got this new one called latitude elbow, I checked it out it seems so bulky than the others on the NHS. Good to hear your knees went well with the replacements, I had my hip done nearly 2 yrs ago now it seems to be good thing but I would never say it beats the natural normal joint function I had before the R.A damaged my hip.

Hi Rhona I had rituximab my last infusion was last feb and kept me quite mobile until nov last year but it doesn't do nothing for joint damage so replacement is option for my bad joints.

Hi Sue, That's not good that you are still in agony, I really hope the operation makes a difference. I am doing alright at the moment thanks. the rituximab has make a big difference to me although I still get pain and my ankle gets bad at times but I am a lot better than I was before I got it and I really hope you get something that will make a big difference to you if the rituximab isn't helping too much. xx

I think that is a very common complaint Sue. I often feel that way and the strange thing is that even although I don't have a lot of energy I still have problems sleeping at nights. It is an unnatural tiredness, more like all the energy has been drained out of me. I think this damned disease seems to hit people that were pretty fit Sue, I always loved walking and would walk for miles and it is hard when you can't do the things you would like to do and feel you still should be able to do. Oh well, Perhaps the better weather will help us all. xx

hi rhona, like you I loved to walk, but I can't even drive now, due to the dam elbows, but getting back to feeling tied all the time, I agree with you, it's like the life has been sucked out of you and yet, when its bed time I'm lucky to get a few hours. roll on summer, we need the sun on our bone's. I hope your feeling well and not in a lot of pain, xx

Hi Sue, I'm trying to decide on an elbow replacement or fusion. I'm 35 and have about an inch movement and no rotation with severe pain. I've had 3 surgeries to my elbow so far and the last on I had an injection in my neck. It was an arm block which left me with no feeling in my arm for about 36 hours post op. Great as no pain, but it literally is a floppy heavy arm that falls about all over the place and is unusable. If you are post replacement, you won't be using your arm anyway, but if the physics try and move it you won't feel a thing! When is your op planned for?

Sue, they did my elbow block while I was under GA so knew nothing about it! Just had a plaster on my neck afterwards! I did however nearly fall off the bed as my arm fell sideways and was so heavy! I had no pain for a while just pins and needles in my hand which was weird. It helped with the post op pain as it was minimal. They did make me stay in hospital until I could feel me arm. Hope that helps! X

hi lucy, the wedding went well, even with the limp, I'm 52 next month, had the arthritis for 10yrs now, I'm in Portsmouth so I go to the QA hospital, im in for an infusion tomorrow, have to be there at 8am and back for the next one in 2 weeks time, but I cant win, having the infusion will delay the elbow op, they have to wait for it to get out your system, I hope your ok and not suffering, sue xx

Congrats on the wedding hope you made some fab memories x I saw my surgeon last week and agreed it met him try and replace my elbow. I've given him one go and then I will have it fused. Unfortunately he wants to operate in the next few weeks to take a load of biopsies to try and reduce my risk of infection as much as possible. I'm gutted as we hoped to be able to get away for a couple of days for my mans birthday. Looks like I will be too ill and that my arthritis has yet again messed up plans to try and be normal. Am really frustrated!
How did infusion go? Are you feeling ok? X

hi lucy, poor you, but look on the bright side, when the op is done you will be able to go away with your man and enjoy more , so keep your chin up, arthritis is a nightmare for all of us, but we cant let it beat us. the drip went well, but hair has gone very dry and frizzy, not sure if it's down to the infusion or not, xx
