I know this might sound really stupid but can you catch a virus through opening a letter that someone has sent to you who had for example shingles? I just opened my sisters Christmas card then read an email from her, she went on to say that she thinks she might have shingles because she has a rash on her ribs. Its not confirmed its only her thinking it, no pain just a rash. You all know how paranoid I can be and to be honest it scared me. I immediately washed my hands in bacteria wipe (and sorry but I threw her cards in the bin obviously using rubber gloves to touch them!!!) Am I being really silly. Please someone give me advice.

thanks Colin I knew I could rely on you to answer How are you? Will remember about hands after opening any letters, I do the same if I have pushed a shopping trolley, always use my handwash. I realise how silly I can be, honestly I am so paranoid. (maybe it runs in family, my sister always thinks the worst) Goodness knows how I will manage over Christmas, all family come on boxing day. And yes I hope she isn't ill for Christmas - Season of Good will or not I said she cant come down just in case, but we never have got together over Christmas so it wont matter we cant offend each other. I wish you and everybody on this forum a nice and pain free Christmas and lots of pain free days for 2014.

I've had the shingles Julie and it's extremely painful, so perhaps your sister hasn't got it if there's no pain. The shingles rash look just like pebbles.

I should also say, I don't think you can catch the shingles like that. The infection comes from within your own body. From the chicken pox.

thanks Linda, I have had shingles myself a couple of years ago and it is painful. If she has had them it hasn't stopped her drinking over the Christmas period!!! Me - well not touched a drop and don't feel as if I have missed out. Hope you had a good Christmas.
