I don't think the recommended tiny glass of red wine a day would do anyone any harm Colin, it may even lift the spirits. What a sobering thought !!!!!

The Daily Mail need a kick up the back side. I am sure all the consultants out there are shaking their heads. Colin I am with you on this one!!! I agree a glass once in a while is ok. A glass of wine every day not so much!!!!!

As mail health articles go, I thought this was one of the best. The guy that wrote it a science writer and produces Horizon and QED. He's also winner of the BMAs Medicine in the Media gold award. I tend not to believe anything from obscure sources. I thought it was common knowledge, that moderate alcohol intake was beneficial and moderate drinkers lived longer than people who are tea total. Even my doctor told me not to give up drinking the red wine.

My NHS consultant rheumatologist said a small tipple a day wouldn't hurt and would probably do more good than harm. Polyphenol compounds found in red wine have proven anti inflammatory properties.

thing is most people with RA take methotrexate & pretty much banned from drinking although a little wont do to much damage as long as you have your bloods done , personaly hate red wine but know its reported good for heart problems but think the claims in the report has nothing to back it up

I too was on methotrexate and was advised, not banned from drinking more than 14 units a week. Beer also contains polyphenols not just wine. This article was also published in the BMJ.

None of the drugs I take prohibit me from drinking alcohol. I didn't know it was published in the BMJ. I thought by mail standards it was an excellent article.

My strict diet prevents me drinking beer, lager and whisky - but I I found that my arthritis does not react to cider, red nor white wine - and a nice gin and tonic on special occasions (like a Saturday!). I have red wine about 5 nights of the week - which as I understand contains resveratol much studied as an anti inflammatory.

Sainsbury do a good organic low sulphate range of wines, the red has no added sulphites at all and at £5.99 is a good price. Sean, what sort of arthritis do you have and do you control it with diet alone?

Hi Lily - I get nearly all my wine from Virgin Wine Club - but I'll definitely keep an eye out for that wine. I do only use diet (no wheat, corn, v. Little cows milk) - but it would be fairer to say that I feel that my supplements are effectively my medication. My Arthritis is AS - with flares affecting first my sacro - lower back with stiffness and soreness working its way outward - down to hips and up to central spine and shoulder blades, rib cage - ending with a crunchy sore neck. I can usually bring a flare episode to a slowdown and then a remission phase by very low carb or brief fasting. I've done this repeatedly for about 20 years - since my mid 20's. I can often hold in a remission state for many months (once lasted a few years) - until the inevitable next battle. I can always feel gut and stomach gripes before I flare - and have almost always linked the start to excessive carbohydrate consumption - rice / potatoes or not taking my magnesium / zinc etc.

Sean, I have sometimes wondered if my sero negative RA is actually AS, symptoms began when I was 17 and have come and gone over the years. Lower back sometimes feels like its locking and shoulders and neck are a problem too. The wine range is called "So Organic", the whites are very good, red not so great.

Lilly,I think that disease names are just convenient labels - I see many forum posts where some have RA and PsA, undifferentiated, poly.. etc. Even osteoarthritis has a proven etology that is not just erosion - yet the label is then used to define the cause without questioning what the cause is. Its the same in the GI world where people fall between IBD and Crohns with a half and half. Have you been tested for HLA-B27 gene - I am negative (although they can be wrong) and only 5-10% of AS sufferers are negative.

Hi Sean, I haven't been tested. I could ask at the private clinic I go to for antibiotic therapy to perform one. Would a different diagnosis make much difference ? You know with all your knowledge you should start your own blog, there aren't enough UK based ones!

Lilly you dont get those problems with RA so think its worth you getting your diagnosis checker , maybe you just got some OA in it , dont know anything about AS myself , talk to your GP & they maybe able to check

Hi Lily - I bought the website name "TreatMeGently.com" a few months back - my brother in law does websites and I do a fair bit of IT work. I will do a blog or a website at some point - but there are plent of excellent international ones with cases like my own "Sickopportunity" is a great blog if you have the time. I think if you are B27 positive then you would be more likely to be AS than RA - it would then open up alternatives such as low-starch and brief fasting to lower the symptoms. (WWW.KICKAS.ORG is an amazing resource of information)

My wife tried the (Micahael Mosely endorsed) 5-2 "Fast" diet last year and she hates not eating - but she had more energy and was more positive during her fasting days. I am trying to get her to try Paleo Diet (v low carb) for her blood pressure. Eating complex carbs MAKES you hungrier for more, IMO slow burn carbs and good protein stops craving. Eating lots of sugar and refined carbs is a vicious cycle leading to depression, mood-swings, intestinal isues then arthritis flare. Carbs and repeated blood sugar spikes and falls and also impact on hormonal balance. BTW - My first diagnosis was Rheumatoid with xray evidence of osteoarthritis, vertebrae narrowing at age 19 - but with my diet change at age 26 - supplementing with magnesium - exercise I have been lucky to fend off any deteriation of joints. Inflammatory osteoarthritis sounds like another 'label' - I often read a very successful blog on Paleo diet call MarksDailyApple.com - I highly recommend this website for any type of arthritis. http://www.marksdailyapple.com/arthritis-diet/#axzz2lkpyq6CY

I do eat quite well, tons of veg, fruit, salmon,no red meat and Im probably one of the few women in the world that doesn't like chocolate or sweets. Im a healthy weight and do try and walk everywhere when I can. My downfall is crisps, I crave them and could easily eat my way through a pillow pack in one sitting, not a pretty sight !
