Subject: Has anyone had a Synovectomy operation

Hi All,

Im new to the forum, I have had RA for 5yrs. I am currently on Humira, MTX, Naproxen & Tramodol. The mix seems to be working quite well (or so I thought) my CRP has come down from 90 to 16 since I have been on the Humira injections, however my right knee is so painfull I can't put any pressure on it, I can't kneel, I can't even get down on the floor (how I long to just sit down on the grass - I never take anything for granted now).

My consultant wants to do a knee synovectomy has anyone had this done, and has it been successfull? They said it would only last for about 12 month if I was lucky.

By the way its very interesting reading everyones topics it makes you realise that you are not alone.

Keep smiling and be positive.

Sue

Hi Sue

Unsure if my info is of any help,

I have inflamatory arthritis Big question mark tho, could be R.A. as mine has flared to 97, anyway my rhummy says its the Reiters disease that causes my synovial inflamation, I have this on both knees and hips, infact all body, I have had arthroscopys to remove broken cartledge, this did help, but because of the Reiters it took me at least 5 months to benefit, dont let that put u off, as we are all different in the recovery process!... 2003 I had that done followed by a Spine op(screws in lumber region) think thats why it took so long for my knees to recover, because I also had the spine op only 5 weeks after knees.

since then, I must admit my knees still give pain, and its because my outer quad muscles are stronger than my inner ones and my knees caps have twisted outwards slightly to look at, ligaments etc, because I have had lots different ops on shoulders, hips, back, they are waiting to see if the synovial fluid becomes less inflamed, then I can do my Knee exercises etc and hope that it remedys the prob...however, I dont have cartledge in part of my knees and they wont replace them at mo... im also waiting to have another spine op.... But my summary Sue of this rambling message is....Have the Op, If you get 12 months Pain relief, how fab is that, then you can exercise and get strength back in them, and You may prove them all wrong, I beleive in Corrective surgery, My back lasted 5 years nearly since last op, but another disc has crumbled, thats the only reason im having another spine op.

Im also on enbrel MTX etc... want to try the Pen injection as mine Hurts!!

Take care and let us know how you get on

this is a fab place to ask for support and also we have a lot of humourous banter inbetween the serious stuff!

love Jill

Hi Jill,

Thank you for replying ot my msg the info was helpful, How do you cope with your health, your an inspiration to us all. I don't have a fraction of what you are having to put up with, sometimes i feel so down and tearful. I should just be grateful that its not worse.

The Humira injections sting like mad, the MTX injections are fine though. Good luck with the Enbrel pen if you go for that option.

Thank you for your support and I will let you know how I get on Monday.

Hi Jill,

Hope your feeling well & your dental problems are getting sorted.

Just to let you know, I had my knees xrayed on Monday, there is no inflammation, so they have my RA under control even though a few weeks previously the Rhuemy Nurse said that it wasn't.

Anyway the outcome was that I have no Cartlidge left in my knees so that is why I am in such pain, he is sending a letter to my GP to refer me to have a knee replacement operation.

I know this is going to take a long time to heal etc but hopefully I should be able to walk my dogs and go Horse riding again. I feel that finally it is getting sorted.

Take care of yourself.

Hi Sue

at least yiou now know what is wrong... Has ALL the cartlidge gone, becoz we have two lots, in the knees, some at the back, and some at the front... or has All yours gone? mine has gone at the front of knee, plus they get inflamed with the synovial fluid, YET they wont do mine!! lol I dont want them done, but i would if they offered the ops to me, I will Moan sooner or later at them, but got so much going on.... need another spine op, and im dreading it, becoz the l;ast time took me 8 months b4 i felt the benefit!! OH well Chin up i guess.... You will recover well Sue, I ddint simply becoz after i had the arthroscopys done, 5 weeks later, I had major back surgery... plus I have Reiters disease and that attacks all the Soft tissues etc, so that made my personal recovery longer.

Ive heard Only good news about Knee replacements, you will def be able to walk your dogs, and once your knees have recovered, of course you can go horse riding.... Stay Positive Ok

Hi Sue,

I work for a market research company that specialises in the medical device field. We are looking for RA sufferers that inject Enbrel, Humira or Methotrexate and either live in the London area or are willing and able to travel to London to take part in an interview. The interview will relate to a new device to help RA sufferers administer their drugs. We will pay £200 to cover expenses and the interview would last approx 90 minutes.

Would you be interested? Please do get in touch if you would like to know more - george.ashford@creativemedicalresearch.com

Best regards,
George
