Subject: Suffering for 5 years still not diagnosed

My name is Carol I am 49 and have been ill now for 5 years {October 2008}.It all started with a virus which myself and my partner had my partner got better I never!I first went to see my rhumy as a private patient and he examined me and took bloods on my second visit he told me that I had had a very bad virus and it would take me months for my health to get back to normal. In 2011 my GP sent me to see him again as I was no better he ordered blood tests before I went and then told me there was nothing seriously wrong with me and I would get better! I had problems with my right knee and kept falling over so I was sent for key hole surgery and the outcome was that I had inflammation present and was told that I had to go back and see the rhumy again.Over the years I have still been in pain some times better than others but have felt so confused as to what is going on in my body I know something is not right!I am now waiting my appointment is 20th November and I am in so much pain nothing takes it away I have given up on meds as they don't seem to help I sleep a lot and don't have much energy.I have had bloods done rheumatoid factor was one.I am dreading the appointment as if he says I am fine I will not cope with it again my GP has said he cannot say this again as there is medical evidence of the problem just feel like I am going insane.I want my life back.

Hi Carol, welcome to the forum. It is a long haul for some but you seem to have been left a long time with no answers.
Just a little suggestion when you go to see the rhumy write a list of all the joints that hurt how tired you feel and how your energy is so low and any questions you have. Many times I came out of the consultants room and realised I had missed out so many things. If you have a partner family member or a good friend you can take to sit in with you to remember all that has been said. I find if too many things are being discussed I forget half of what has been said.
I hope this helps and good luck with your appointment and please let me know how you get on.
Chin up and take care x

Hi Marlene thank-you so much for your kind words,I have had a good talk to my partner this evening and I am going to speak to my GP tomorrow as I am struggling at the moment and don't feel I can carry on much longer, the pain has changed so much recently my ankles and wrists feel like they have been snapped and my neck pain is a lot worse I have read so much on the internet and it all says that things should not be left and treated early before things get to bad.I feel that I am being a pain complaining but I cannot cope with the pain and keep crying and life is getting harder to cope with.I am so very lucky my partner supports me so much but he feels so helpless it has effected his life in many ways too.If my GP cannot do anything then I think I may go private to see the rhumy.Thanx again Carol xx

It is very hard to come to terms with it all. Don't ever think you are a pain you are in pain and hopefully you will get sorted soon. Try to take your partner to the GP with you and let him say the things you forget to say I find it so helpful. Many times I have walked away thinking I forgot to say this and that. I write it all down before I go.
It does affect everyone else around us but when you have a support net work it helps so much.
I just call it my new life as life is still great just a bit slower and some days a bit painful.
Keep your chin up Carol I hope you get some help at the GP's. XX
