Subject: finger splints

I had appointment with OT on Thursday, she has given me finger splints (plastic 8 shaped ones) three on one hand and two on other hand. Has anyone else had to wear these? Before I started wearing them my hands were totally pain free but only after a couple of hours on Thursday and couple of hours on Friday my wrists are so painful and I can see swellings appearing around my wrists. She also gave me some gloves to sleep in and a splint to use when I am hoovering etc., I wouldnt mind if my fingers were really bent they arent, even she said they are not bad so I am wondering is wearing them going to cause damage that wasnt there before, honestly I have been pain free for weeks now, but tonight my left hand is so painful. Any tips or advice would be appreciated. I will be ringing my helpline number next week to tell whats happening, I just wondered if anyone else had same problem with the pain.

Hi Julie, I was given splints from the hospital but not finger splints or gloves. I can't say if they would be beneficial in stopping the joints getting deformed or not but if you are finding they are making your hands more painful then I wouldn't use them. I find my splints help when my wrists are sore and I did buy some finger splints when my fingers were painful and I found them quite helpful. If the medications work as they should then hopefully you won't get much damage to your hands. Did you perhaps have them on too tight?

Sounds rough Julie.

If you're getting any pain from them i wouldn't use them again till you've had another chat with her.
