Subject: flare ups

Hi, can tomatoes cause a flare up? Today I have felt really ill, in fact we were going out for lunch and my husband looked at me and said I think we should get you home you dont look well. As soon as I got in I was sick, felt so tired and started to stiffen up and have been snuggled under the duvet all afternoon (in this weather!!!) The reason I ask about tomatoes is I think I heard it once and over the last couple of days I have been eating them straight from greenhouse. If this was a flare do they sometimes only last a few hours? Im sorry to always be asking questions, hopefully I will get used to this way of life!!! No more tomatoes either.
thankyou

Hi Julie, I think certain foods probably can cause a flare. I know when I eat foods containing a lot of sugar I do seem to feel worse. I have also noticed if I eat sardines or salmon etc then I do feel a bit better. It is a bit of trial and error. If you find certain foods make you feel worse then it is wise to cut them out but very difficult to cut out everything, especially when you enjoy it.

Hi Julie,

Tomatoes which are under the night shade family of vegetables e.g with red bell peppers and aubergines being the others can cause flare ups especially if eaten in the natural state not being cooked or just fresh and raw, I have R.A I do find it gets me flared when I used to eat them. Cooking them sometimes destroys the acidity of the them but I still try and avoid them.

Hi Julie, you are right to visit GP. I wouldn't see why fresh fruits or vegetables would cause this. Maybe you could have an allergy or it is just coincidental that you felt ill after eating tomatoes.
I Hope you feel better soon!!

thankyou Marlene, g.p. didnt say anything at all, didnt know why back was hurting, didnt know why I was feeling so sick (and was sick) didnt comment on how swollen my hands were so waste of time really. I am so weepey at the moment tears come on at the flick of a switch dont know why maybe I am crying over loss of my old self I feel as if my life has ended really with nothing to look forward to, silly cos I have the most caring husband you could wish for but then I cry cos I think I have stopped his life aswell - oh I am being so stupid I must stop. I rang my helpline number last Thursday because I had some bruises on my arms (my blood nurse said to tell my rheumy nurse) but today is Wednesday and still no answer from them, bruises have gone now!!! I do feel a lot better today in fact I am sat near an open door trying to do some ironing but the iron feels so heavy so will only do some of it. I am such a scardey cat about this illness I panic about everything, only diagnosed this February and there is so much to deal with but hopefully will get there. Thankyou for reply

Julie I hope you are feeling somewhat better this evening. It is so hard to get your head around the changes this arthritis causes. It is very normal to be sad as you are coming to terms with your new life. You will get over this bad patch and you will be saying ok I cant do this but I can do this. You will have better days!!!
It is great you have a caring husband we all need to know our partners are on our side, remember you would do the same for him. You will both adjust to your new lives and it will be good once you come to terms with it all.
Keep your chin up take care xxxxxx

thanks Marlene I know your right I have to learn to accept it, and reading posts everybody goes through so much its natural to feel like this. My biggest fear is never being able to go on holiday again (mainly because of if I get ill while I am away). I do feel a bit better today though and we are going to Sewerby Nr. Bridlington, its not too far away and we are going for fish and chips, should be nice day. Thanks for your support.

Hi Julie, don't worry you will be able to go on holiday many of us do. If you should go abroad just make sure you have the correct insurance be honest with them and tell them everything. It can be costly but its essential.
One of the girls on here has had a lovely holiday on the Canary Islands that's where I go myself in the Winter to catch some sun.
There is assistance at the airport and I buy a speedy boarding ticket so I don't have to rush along, I go first so I can take my time and no one notices how slow I am LOL.

I hope you have a lovely day out and enjoy those fish & chips.

ohhhh that has really cheered me up so I might go on holiday again, dont know about getting speedy passes and everything maybe you need to get benefits to be able to get one - which I have applied for and been refused, I told it as it was and said sometimes I can do things sometimes not, so they turned me down - but I will look into things about going away.

Fish and chips were lovely but it was scorching hot, too hot to be out in it so we kept in shade where we could. Thankyou Marlene you will be sick to death of me before long.
xx
Ohhh I cant wait to tell family that we might be able to go away again and that people do manage to go away with this, cant stop smiling.

Hi Julie, nice to hear you had a good day. No I won't get sick to death at all.
The speedy boarding cost £10 each way on flight if you can afford it well worth the money.
Why don't you apply again and tell them your worst day only. At the end of the day how many good days do we have?
It is very normal to be refused benefits the first time around.
Julie I am so glad you are smiling again have a lovely evening xx

Don't be concerned about not having a holiday I just returned to Australia after 12 days in Great Britain. RA is my biggest health issue atm but I am also a Type 1 diabetic and also have myasthenia gravis. There is nothing more I can do about my health so I live and do the best I can. As hard as it is try to remain positive and "roll with the punches".

thanks Gayza, you sound like you have a lot of problems yourself, but if you can do a long journey like that then there is hope for me yet, furthest I go is Europe, my problem is when I am having a flare up (like I am now AGAIN) I imagine if I was on holiday, then this is my third day in bed because I cant get downstairs, then half the holiday would have been spent in bed!! But I take on board what you say and am beginning to realise I am being a bit silly as so many people on here do go away - so its me being daft!! Thanks once again and I bet you were glad to get away from our peculiar weather.
