Subject: wrist pain

Have osteoarthritis bad in right wrist and can feel it starting in left. I'm a roofer and only 50 so many years of work still to do. Feel so desperate at times. Does anyone have any advice on pain management or has anyone had a wrist fusion to relieve pain??? Feel sick at times thinking of future.

Hi Stephen, firstly you need to get your pain medication sorted. Then you need to ask your GP to refer you to a Consultant that deals with OA.
They can scan your body (MRI) to see how far your OA has gone. Then they will discuss your options surgery is not always an option.
I have had surgery but not on my wrists so I can't help with that.
Don't worry about the future there is help out there. I hope this helps.
Chin up and Take care.

Hi Stephen, I too have oa in both wrists as well as big toes, and I can feel it starting in my ankle. It's so horrible isn't it. Luckily I have a desk job, but unluckily that involves a lot of typing and using the mouse and driving. You could try wrist splints, but they do restrict movement which might be too restricting for you. But they would give you an idea as to whether a fusion might suit you, as the surgery would reduce your movement in your wrist. I'm waiting to see an ortho surgeon to discuss if I need a fusion too. There are plenty of pain meds to try. If you don't have stomach problems there are good anti inflammatories you can take. Good luck.

Hi, thanks for the replies. I've seen a couple of consultants and had a MRI. Tried over the counter pain killers and ibubrofin but non it seems to do anything. Driving myself mad as well as the wife. Hands look so normal and yet so much discomfort. Just want to get my life back. Just have to try some injections i think. Cheers Stephen.

Try prescription painkillers too whilst waiting for the njehctions. I had an injection in my thumb base which did help.

hi Stephen, you have to get the right combination of pain meds. I take tramadol along with Co-Dydramol. It took me a while to find something which helped. There is nothing worse than having constant pain. You don't have to put up with pain speak with your GP. Over the counter pain killers are not good enough for OA pain when it is constant.
Take care and good luck with GP.
