Hi Kazz, I have been taking hydroxychloroquine for around 6 or 7 years and i have found it helpful. You have to get your eyes checked every year while you are on it although they say for the dose we are on it shouldn't cause any problems. I also take mtx and sulphasalazine. I usually go to my local pharmacy as they give me plaquenil which is the same drug but it doesnt have the same horrible taste that hydroxychlorine has. I would give it a try as it is is one of the safer drugs for r/a.

Hi Kazz. I've been on hydroxychloroquine for 6 years and it's been useful most of the time. Very recently I've had a number of flare ups, however, so we're now looking at alternatives (intermittent oral steroids or MTX). Found it much kinder than the previous sulfasalazine that I was on that made me so ill I couldn't move. Definitely one of the 'nicer' drugs for RA.

I've not had any side effects on hydroxy. The only thing I have to watch out for is being out in the sun. I'm very photosensitive on hydroxy so I have to wear factor 50+ right the way through summer and I always make sure I'm as covered up as I can possibly bear to be.

I always take it after food Kaz and i have been fine with it. When i first started it i used to smoke and would feel a bit sick when i had both so i gave up the ciggies and then had no problems so it really helped me to stop me smoking. I am also a bit sensitive to the sun, i get very red after 10mins so always wear cream if i am out in the sun and i wear a big hat when abroad. x

I don't think you would need monthly blood tests Kazz as it doesn't have the same toxic side effects. I was still having pain etc with the mtx and didn't think it helped me but they said sometimes a combination of drugs works best so i was kept on it when they added hydroxychloroquine and then i felt much better within weeks. x

I don't have monthly blood tests. I see my rheumy every 4-6 months (more often with flares) and have mine done each time I see him.
The main thing is getting your eyes tested every year and tell the optician you are on this medication.

Has anyone had a bad reaction to hydroxocholoquine? I am on methotrexate and pentasa. On the last week of steroids but last week had a bad flare. Stopped hydrochloriquinine for three days and felt better. Restarted two days ago and got stomach ache? Do the bad side effects go away. I have been on it for over month now. And as it doesn't work for 12 weeks I am reluctant to stop it. Thanks
