Subject: Wrist pain and working

I have just been diagnose with pa and will start methxodate in may I would like to get some advice on helping with the pain in my wrists whilst at work. I work in an office using a keyboard all day which somedays I find really hard due to the wrist pain. Can anyone recommend any aids or if they have found that ergonomic keyboards are any good??

hi Emma , cant help you with the keyboard but Methotrexate should help you a lot , will take a few weeks to kick in but its a good drug for RA & PA if you get on with it , a steriod injection would help if you need it before the drug starts to work

Hi Emma, A wrist support might help. I know it helps me when my wrist is sore. Make sure that your chair is at the right height for your desk so that you are not putting extra strain on your wrists. Hope the mtx helps you soon.

Do you work in a large organisation? If you do, you should get some advice, help and support to make your workplace more ergonomic. There are also grants available from the government, I think, for this sort of thing. Voice activated software might help - I have a friend who knows about this sort of thing,I will ask her when I see her at the weekend if you like.

Wrist splints, which you can get from the rheumatologist. They're a bit cumbersome, but they do help a lot with wrist pain.

If you are able to, get in touch with your works occupational health service (usually via your HR department). If your organisation is too small to have an OT service, then you should definitely contact Access to Work (you can google them) and get an assessment from them.
When I was first diagnosed with RA I got loads of help from them - paying for taxi's to and from work, an ergonomic chair and the most valuable long term thing, Dragon Dictate software for my computer to allow me to talk to my computer so I didn't have to type so much. It takes some time for all the paperwork to go through but it was worth it. Good luck.

Hi Emma, I have terrible wrist pain from oa. I saw occupational health who bought me an ergonomic mouse. Evoluent its called. Much better for my wrist. They also got a gel filled wrist support for me. Make sure your wrists are not bent upwards as you type- sit higher. And get wrist supports. I'm still waiting to see an occupational therapist, but I bought the neoprene ones that have the metal strip in, to use in the meantime until I get proper advice. I also use them for driving. Good luck. You don't need to suffer. Try different options til you find the one that helps best, or a combination.
