Subject: Day to day living with RA

I would be interested in other people's input about their daily dealing with RA. Also interested in anyones views about the drug Sulphasalazine. I have been taking Arcoxia 90mg daily and Methotrexate 25mg once a week and folic acid to help with relief of serious mouth sores and burned mouth syndrome. In the past year my RA has become very very bad. It hurts to walk due to ankle and knee pain. Hands and fingers have become painful also muscles in tops of arms and legs send pain throughout my whole body. Truth is I dont feel any relief from any of my meds anymore. I have not yet been offered Sulphasalazine. Tiredness and generally feeling very unwell, sometimes feeling like I have been hit by a truck. Often spending two or more days in bed due to chronic tiredness. Feel depressed knowing this will only get worse....

hi Georgina

I have been on Sulphasalazine since 1996 & methotrexate 25mg since 1998 , sulph not as good as Mtx & take 5mg folic acid 6 days a week , it sounds like your RA not under control & need maybe to go on a anti-tnf drug ,

the tiredness & mild depression goes with it & we have different ways of dealing with it , the link section above has National Rheumatiod Arthritis Socity website & they recomend Cognitive behavioural therapy , + it goes with sleep problems because of the pain , some on here do meditation / mindfullness & others take mild antidepressant but be careful with anything taken with Mtx

just one question , how much folic acid you taking & are you still getting mouth problems

Hi Georgina, it is very difficult to get people on the right drugs to control their RA but it WILL get better. It sounds as if you need to try another dmard (which you will have to do in any case before you can move on to the ant tnfs.) Why not ring NRAS helpline. They are brilliant and can go through all the options with you.

Hi Georgina,

I started on sulphasalazine when i was first diagnosed around 12 years ago and i am still on it. After being on it for 4 years when it wasn't working too well they introduced MTX then plaquenil and now rituximab (biologic drug) It could be worth trying it and/or plaquenil. If you are suffering then it looks like your disease is active and you do need something You could also ask about the biologic drugs.
Good luck x.
