Subject: DRY EYE

Hi. I'm a newbie to this site. I have RA which is kept under control very well, but I do suffer from severe dry eye 24/7. Tried lots of preservative free drops (as recommended by specialist) but none seem to work very well. Any advice would be gratefully received.

hi Margaret

there is several of us on here with dry eyes because of RA , I use hypromellose eye drops 0.3% from Boots 4 times a day & seems to work & get it on prescription , they done a test with blotting pager in my eyes for 5mins & it stay totaly dry

last year had more problems with my eyes & developed Scleritis , so you need to look after them

the hypromellose varies from shop to shop & find the Boots one pretty good

I have Celluvisc (carmelose sodium) single-use drops on prescription. I found the ones with preservative in (ie. the ones which aren't single-use) make my eyes hurt even more. But I am finding that I have to use them more and more and they only bring temporary relief. At night it's the worst - I wake up with my eyelids stuck to my eyeballs! Horrible!

Hi Colin
Thanks for the info. Not sure if I've tried these or not but will check in Boots to see if they are familiar. Will certainly try them again anyway. I find my dry eye is worse when out in the car (even in daylight) so have had to stop driving as my eyes prickle and I have to squint and I don't feel my focusing is safe enough to drive. Its so miserable at times isn't it. My RA consultant is brilliant, but I don't think unless you actually suffer from it, you don't understand how bad it can be.

Hi Caroline
Yes, I too have tried Celluvisc on presc and didn't find them much good. Also found it hard to squirt the drops in. I'm trying Scope Hyco San Extra and ViTa-pos eye ointment at night. Both are from Scope via internet. The Hyco San Extra is very easy to use and lasts for up to 6 months. Like all the others I have tried though they seem to work better at first trying them and then not so good.

Hi Colin

Tried the eyedrops you suggested. Do think they are as good as the ones I have been using (and a lot cheaper) but they still don't ease the gritty feeling much. There must be one out there, although I have tried a lot.

Hi Margaret,

Have you had your optician look at your eyes? they can sometimes help and give advice. Sometimes the dry heat like central heating can make it worse. Have you tried warm face cloths over the eyes for a little relief, sometimes it can make them feel a bit better. Hope you get something to help.

Hi Margaret,

I got other problems with my eyes that goes with RA , one of our part time GP's is also a eye consultant which helps , have you got any thing else going on with your eyes , ask your GP , they can give those eye drop on prescription anyway

just watch out for redness in your eyes , sometimes it seems like conjunctivitis & starts lasting a few days

btw if you go to a optican they will tell you all the drops are similar , & some take photo's of the back of your eyes

Hi Rhona & Colin
Thanks for your advice. My RA consultant sent me to see a eye specialist. He said my eyes were perfectly healthy and it was just a matter of finding drops which suited me. Suggested I used preservative free ones but still finding it hard to find one that is any good. Think I will go back to my GP and see if he can suggest any other alternative. I just seem to have the soreness or prickly sensation all the time I am awake.

Hi Colin
Thanks as usual for useful info. Had a look on the web site and was interested in Ciclosporin but when looked further into it, it sounded very similar to Hydroxocloroquine which I am already on. However will ask my RA consultant when I see her in May. When I went to see the eye specialist he was going to plug my tear ducts but they had plugged themselves naturally due to salt deposits. Also, before going back to the GP re trying other drops intend having a check up with my optician to make sure nothing else going on, as for the last few days feel as if I have got something under my eyelid, not the usual dryness, prickling etc. Will let you know.

Try night time eye ointment as well as the day time drops. Lacri-lube or Vita-pos are brilliant. Simple Eye Ointment also great but is greasier
