Well, they are trialling it right now in a London hospital so suppose it has to succeed at that then go through NICE. Could be soon. or am I being over optimistic? Am moving to a new doctor soon who is supposed to be at the cutting edge of research so I will ask her as soon as we meet!

Hi bsk, I am thinking of asking for a second opinion from another specialist, because as you know I've felt my RA out of control for the last18-24 months. I was told as well that I would be able to have unlimited injections for shoulders and knees. I don't agree that is the way forward for me. I just feel a bit naughty if I ask to see someone else. If you do ask and see someone else, does that mean you are only under the second specialist after that. Regards x

Hi Emm, it does mean you get referred to another consultant so will be under their team from then on. Don't be afraid to change if you really feel you are not getting the support you need. Do you have a sympathetic nurse at the hospital you could discuss this with? Sometimes they can tell you if there is a doctor they think you will suit better. You are not there for the doctors, it is the other way around! I would also chat to GP as well and get their view. Quite often these sort of decisions to change are best managed together. Also, do your research on line and talk to other people too. I can't remember what meds you are on but maybe there are others you could try. xx

Colin, don't be so cynical :) Arthritis Research are funding it and Kings College Hospital are running the trial. You can find details on their website under the research. It is something called binding immunoglobulin protein which kickstarts the immune system. Sounds promising.

did find this , does sound hopful , will be several years before most of us gets a chance but they are doing so much good research into RA in last 15-20 years , even if this is not the answer we can still have hope http://www.kcl.ac.uk/newsevents/news/newsrecords/2013/02-Feb/First-in-human-trial-of-a-new-drug-for-arthritis.aspx btw the Daily Express were having 7 cures a month for arthritis which is part of the reason for not trusting them

I think this is great news. To be actually tackling the disease via the immune system, which must be faulty, seems to make sense to me. Hope we can all benefit soon. It seems a new 'take' on things. Bsk, thanks for answering my query. Let us know what your new doctor says about reserch. Regards Emm
