Subject: my hubby has recently been diagnosed! help

hello all, my hubby has finally been diagnosed with RA after a yr!! they didn't want to as they say at 29 it's uncommon but now they have given him a load of pills but the rheumatoid consultant says he is ok to go back to work!! it saddens me to see him getting worse by the day. the methatrixiate makes him so sick and he is always tired....my question is how can he go back to work ??? his job is a delivery driver and he hasn't been at work for most of this yr. he is constant pain and wets himself in the morning because he is so stiff in the morning he never makes it to the loo on time.

Hi Sarah,

I am so sorry to hear the your husband has R/A it must be a worry for you both. I have had it for over 12 years and know how debilitating it can be and it can take a few months for the medication to kick in, Sometimes more than one drug is needed. Has he been offered some other form of pain relief until the mtrx starts to work? I remember getting a steroid injection and that helped a bit.

When he feels better he may well be able to go back to work. Try and stay positive as things will get better. Last year i couldn't get out the chair without help but i am managing a lot better now since having started a biologic.

I hope the new year brings you both good things and your husband feels a lot better.

I meant to say, some people find stepping up on the folic acid can help with the side efects of mtx and you can also have it in injection form as i have heard that lessens the sick feeling.

hi Sarah

one site that may help you with helpline etc. is National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society http://www.nras.org.uk/

I like Rhona have had RA a long time & been on Methotrexate 14 years , on 25mg now + folic acid six days a week (5mg) does sorts most of the side effects , realy good drug for RA if he can get on with it

the outlook for RA is so much better than when we developed it , a lot less people get joint damage & with the new drugs like the biologics can give a lot of hope

like Rhona said ask for a steriod boaster until the Mtx kicks in
