Subject: Injections seem to be my future!

Hi all, I was at hospital yesterday and had to have an injection in both shoulders.
Had one in the knee 3 weeks ago,( some may remember me moaning on about the wait I had to see someone.)
I am told that my pain is due to degeneration of the joints and I am bone rubbing on bone in my knees and shoulders. Dr says he doesn't recommend surgery. And is willing to inject my joints 6 monthly if needed of course.
I only take mtx as I have chest probs and can't take bio's.
I did work a long time and knew I should have left many years earlier too. So if any young people are struggling give it some thought, Is it worth the extra wear and tear and pain.
I got RA at a young age 24. I also wasn't sent to see a rheumatologist for 10years too, only told to take solvable aspirin.
Damage is done now though and I am happy if I can tick over reasonably well. But have had a real bad year of flare up.
I hope 2013 can be a better one.
For all of us.
Best wishes to all. Emm x

Sorry to hear you are going through a tough time Emm, many Surgeons don't agree with operating on joints too early I don't know if this is the case with you. I hope the injections work for you. I have OA and I was unlucky the injections didn't give me much relief and I have had elbow and back surgery. I know at some stage I will need a shoulder op but I am in no hurry. LOL.
Take care Emm I wish you luck with the injections.

Hi Emm,

My goodness that was very young to get R/A and that's bad you had to wait so long for a diagnosis. Perhaps you should ask for a second opinion about a joint replacement if it were to be needed. Lets hope next year will be a good year for you and things will settle, i didn't have a good year either so i do hope we all have a better one for 2013.

Take care xx

Hi bsk,
I didn't ask, I think I was a bit overwhelmed at the time, I had been struggling with my pain and it was the day when the roads were badly flooded, the hospital was nearly empty!
I will ask next time. Plus you know how it is, the doctor starts talking and I never remember to get all my questions asked!
Hope you are not too bad at the moment.
I am off to Edinburgh next week for 3 days and we are going to see Dirty Dancing.
Then my daughter and her family are coming for Christmas week. So I was relieved as I will be able to get around better. Keep well. X

Hi Marlene, nice to hear from you, injections do usually work for me, the knee is very much better for now.
I did think it strange to hear I could have them readily in the future. Maybe It won't be every 6 months.
I just have had a rough year, before this I had ticked over for a few years. It is a strange disease, I have had spells of a few years of settled times and out of the blue it goes haywire.
I really don't like the flare ups. It's scary.
Keep well, and merry christmas. X

Hi Rhona, nice to hear from you, Yes 24 was young but now we have Verity on the forum at 19. I really feel for her and replied to her post.
There are newer drugs now so her future should be a lot better.
I do hope so.
I hope we both have a better year next year. No flare ups!
I am really glad I found this site earlier this year, you have all helped me a lot. A good moan to people who understand.
Have a lovely christmas and keep well. X

Hi Emm, You are right, i think a good moan can help us lol. I feel for Verity too, it isn't a nice disease for anyone and it saddens me to hear of young girls suffering with it. I hope you have a great trip to Edinburgh. Does your daughter live there? I like the music from dirty dancing, i must check it out as Edinburgh is only 45 mins from me. Take care xx

Hi again bsk and Rhona, 4 of us girls are going to Edinburgh, yes I've heard Dirty Dancing is excellent, will report back on it!
It's on at the playhouse.
My daughter lives in Switzerland and is coming Christmas Eve till New Year's Eve with her hubby and 2 children.
We are having Christmas Day lunch out. Going to a pantomime ( which I love) A day at a car rally. For her hubby's benefit. Plus lot's of shopping for the girls.
A week is quickly over. I hope the snow keeps away that week as they are always on the move!
Speak soon. X
