Subject: diagnosis of PA

Some advice please.I live in Argyll I've had arthritis for many years in my back and hips. Last year I went to see the doctor for the first time following xrays he agreed that the arthritis was quite severe and this resulted in me having a hip replacement this April. I'm in my late 50s now and have had psoriasis in my legs since my early 20s. When I walk my toes hurt especially my big toe and so do my fingers and wrists, I also get severe pain in my lower back round the cocyx. I become extremely tired suddenly. I believe I may have psoiriatic arthritis but my doctor will not refer me, he is very old school and I would move doctors but he is the only one for miles. I live in quite a remote part of Scotland. I am becoming quite anxious as with every day that goes by my mobility becomes worse. He will only prescribe painkillers and ibroprufen, I am not a time waster, before all this happened last year I had'nt been near a doctor for eight years. Has anyone else had the same diagnostic problems what would you all suggest I do. I am still working although I don't know for how long. as I'm on my feet all day.

Hi Margaret. Sorry to hear that you are suffering so much. It is possible to have osteo arthritis and psoriatic arthritis. I think you will have to insist that your doctor sends you to see a rheumatologist, you are entitled to a second opinion. Is he the only one in the surgery that you can see? I have rheumatoid arthritis and had to go a few times before i was referred but you will have to be firm with him. Good luck, i do hope things improve for you soon.
