Subject: Flare up

Hi I was diagnosed with RA in February. I am on MTX 20mg which seems to be working well for me. Have only had one flare since in June and that was knee.

On Thursday I started getting pain in hand. Yesterday started getting extreme pain and swelling on top of hand near wrist joint, knuckle of first finger on wrist and little finger. I wanted to know if either of these 2 things could have caused the flare. Just had 2 colds one on top of each other, and also have been diy to the extreme, removed 8 doors frames and skirting boards. Ben sleeping and resting today and using cold compress which has got the swelling down, thank goodness as hand was really clawing. Would it have been the cold or the overdoing diy?
Many thanks Jeanette

Hi Jeanette, it could be a combination of both things. I had an ear infection in June and then I started to get pain and swelling in both elbows. Alongside this we bought a house in May and have been decorating it since. My GP gave me a two week course of steroids which took away the swelling and pain away for about a month, then I stripped the wallpaperin our spare room. The pain and swelling came back. I had a second unsuccessful course of steroids, now I have pain and swelling in both elbows and my right wrist. A third trip to my GP I now have diclofenac to keep me going until my rheumatologist appointment at the end of October. I am hoping a steroid injection will sort them out. If you are still flaring I would go see yours too. However stopping the DIY for a while might help. My partner won't let me help anymore. Good luck.

Thanks. It is so annoying when you want to just carry on with life isn't it. I am ringing my rheumy nurse to try and see her regarding medication. My Dr gave me Dihydrocodeine for the medicine cabinet in case of a flare but it does not touch the pain. When I had the flare in June I was a mes. and she gave me tramadol but had severe reaction, landed up vomiting 5 times. I just need something for the extreme pain, luckily none of my flares have lasted longer than a week, although get twinges I don't need to take anything for that.
Hubby had a heart attack in March so I won't allow him to help. Maybe I will just have to land up paying tradesmen to do these things.

I am sure it is the DIY Jeanette. I can't do anything like that any longer. It might be better to pace your diy in future. I love gardening and my rheumy said if I garden one day I have to rest the next. Also to put wrist splints on after the activity but not while you are doing it. My sitting room desperately needs decorating but know I can't do it myself so have to pay someone.Very annoying as I used to do stuff like that all the time.

Thanks bsk. I think I will see if I can get an appt with rheumy nurse. I need to sort out some sort of medication that will get me through the first day of the flare and ask about some splints. I think I just forgot I have RA lol as the MTX is working so well.

Well, that's the up side I suppose! Also, some people say you can flare when you have an infection so maybe the combination of the two. Rheumy nurse will prob know! take care
