Subject: new thread for Lynn, Rhona, Marlene and anyone else who wants to join in

Hi there girls, thought I would start a new thread, last one a bit long.

Now I've got a sore throat. Hope this isn't yet another blip in my efforts to control my RA with Enbrel. Damn and blast!

How are you all doing? How's the knee Rhona, the breathing Lynn and pain Marlene?

Aw bsk, that's not good, my throat feels a bit strange tonight as well and i don't usually get a sore throat, so hopefully it won't come to anything, my father when he was alive would tell me to gargle my throat with whisky (then swallow it) although that was his cure for everything lol. will you need to start the antibiotics again?

My Knee is feeling a lot better but i'm trying to rest it as they said the jab works better if you rest joint for up to 48 hours. I would love to go for a long walk.

I caught the tail end of the news tonight and they were talking about some new treatment for arthritis, i checked the daily express online and i think it is for osteo arthritis, some type of injection, may help you Marlene.

Going to have a wee cuppa tea and sandwich then off to bed, i didn't sleep last night so hope i do tonight.
Take care xxx

Hi Rhona, i will get on google sounds interesting. I will give it a go if it is up for the taking. I am starting to feel unwell in myself I don't know if its the bad sleeping pattern or just the pain or maybe pain killers.
I'm off on hols for a few days on monday so maybe this will help.I really think i am over doing it but I just can't sit.(my own worst enemy as they say).

Enough of me bsk hope you are not in for this infection that has been doing its travels. If the whiskey doesn't help try brandy!!!!

Rhona glad to hear you knee is feeling better. Rest it as much as you can

Rhona, how is your throat today? Mine is very sore and I'm getting a cold. Just trying to look after myself so it doesn't turn into another chest infection. Easier said than done. Bored after half a day at home during which time I slept, watlched Great British Bakers and Precious!

Marlene, how are you this evening? Hope everyone is feeling better.

Hi Lynn, I have had protein in my urine before and when they sent it away it always came back clear, they say it is quite common. My daughter has diabetes type 1. Before she was diagnosed she had an extreme thirst she would drink pints of water constantly and she lost weight and got very tired, as far as i know that is the usual way type 1 diabetes starts. It may be something else that's causing it so try not to worry.

Sorry that your throat is still sore bsk, mine was fine this morning although my daughter that went back to Spain is complaining of a sore throat, she always seems to get them. Hope you feel better soon, just take care of yourself.

I managed to go and get my hair coloured today, i don't like when my grey roots grow lol. I was so glad my daughter had the car when i came out as it was thunder and lightening and the rain was like a river flowing down the road, my husband was in East Kilbride today and said it was snowing, who would believe it in August. I have recorded the Paralympics opening ceremony so will watch it now.

Hope you are feeling better Marlene, it's not good when you can't sleep, i had a good sleep last night for a change.

Take care girls. xxx

Hi Rhona, Glad you managed to get to the hairdresser - it always makes you feel better to get your hair done. Did mine last week, instant improvement lol!

Regarding the snow in August - I would believe anything this year. This morning it is cold and wet though I gather we are having a mini heat wave next week (when I go to the paralympics, hopefully.) Throat very bad this morning so am staying in bed. Prob watch some of the games a bit later on.

Hope you got some sleep last night Marlene.

I hope you are right about mini heatwave going away monday for five days. Sitting in the country taking in the sunshine will do me just fine.

This rain is getting me down a bit mentally (haha) i hate grey days. My Dr tells me I suffer with SAD. I don't mind the cold as long as the skies are blue.I have no doubt you all feel the same.

How nice going to the paralympics enjoy your day and give them a big shout well done from me!!!!

I always have protein in my urine but it's the ketones they were worried about anyways I was not feeling so good yesterday and went to see the dr he said my neautrafils were dangerously low and he would need to stop my treatment and give me a antibiotic to start staight away as it was likely I was brewing an infection and they were too low and could be dangerous.... I have to get the bloods done on tues again and also fast on the Monday night for testing for diabetes so fingers crossed so i am off my meds for now :(

To-day I have a headache from hell and my neck is so stiff and cracking at every slight move. I am getting on the best I can I have so much to sort before this holiday,if it doesn't get done whatever! this is my neighbours motto. Thanks Lynn, bit the bullet last night and took the antibiotics and then slept for 12 hours! Going to take it easy today but, yes, it is one thing after another. It is so damn tedious.

I hope you manage to get an earlier appt. I don't think I could last til 11am without something to eat or drink. They usually automatically give you the first appt if you are fasting. I wish you luck with it and hope it is all negative.

I hope it clears up quickly now that you are on the antibiotics bsk. It's a vicious circle, i just wish they could find something that would help us all that didn't cause any side effects, oh well, perhaps one day.

Lynn, i think the infusionsn have helped a little although i was in a lot of pain until i got the steroid last week. I go back at the end of this month for a review, so not sure, what will happen. I do hope things are ok with you. If we could all just get a good break from all of this it wouldn't be so bad, still i shouldn't complain as i do feel a bit better than i was but i always remember one of the consultants telling me years ago after getting the steroid jag that it was a false sense of well being, at least it's a bit of a relief for the time being.

Look after yourselves girls.

Hi Girls, (Hello Janet, welcome!)

Rhona, there is nothing wrong with false sense of well being if it gets you through tough times. I'm just about to boost my false sense of well being too by putting up steroids to get me through this illness, on nurses advice of course! I spoke to her this morning and she said I did the right thing taking the antibiotics We had a chat about how many infections I've had this year and she is going to try and get me an early appt with the chest consultant, with a view to getting me on long term antibiotics.

She agreed that the other drugs would be exactly the same and the risk of getting a chest infection with Rituximab is one in five so I would almost certainly get one and that is the next line of treatment if I stop Enbrel. So the plan is to keep me on Enbrel with a shed load of antibiotics.

Lynn, you know yourself better than anyone so the sooner they find out what is wrong, the better. I sympathize completely with your fears of not being able to tolerate any of these drugs as I feel the same way myself. Talk about being between a rock and a hard place.

Marlene, you ok or have you gone on your hols yet?

Take care everyone. Chat later.

You are right bsk, there is absolutely nothing wrong with anything that makes us feel better, whether it be steroids or even a couple of glasses of wine lol. It might be a good idea to get low dose long term antibiotics. I know someone whose son is on low dose antibiotics, he has been on them for years as he had to get his spleen removed due to illness.

Let us know how you get on tomorrow Lynn, it could just be the mtx that is causing the problem, try not to worry until you know for sure what it is.

Yes, you do that Lynn. Don't hesitate to take yourself off to casualty if you feel at all unwell - they will whisk you in straight away as they did once to me. I refused to continue on Mtx after a got a chest infection that took 4 weeks of antibiotics to clear up. I thought I was bordering on pneumonia. Wouldn't touch it again.

This must be a worrying time for you but we are here for you.

I went to the Paralympics today. The place heaving with mobility buses, mostly filled with people who couldn't be bothered to walk rather than couldn't so it was hard to get on one
But the park was fabulous and the venues too. Couldn't believe I managed to get there but a boost in my steroid intake was largely responsible lol! Had a wonderful day out and not before time. That was my treat :)

Take care girls.

Hi Girls, Pleased to hear you have had a good day bsk, something a bit different. some people are so lazy, you would think they would be happy to walk if they could.

Try and stay away from anyone with an infection Lynn until they increase. My daughter suffers from low white cells but they seem to think they rise when she has an infection so they are not too worried.

I went for the reflexology today, it was nice but the girl was a bit heavy handed, when i stood up i could hardly put my foot on the floor so i had to limp home, just as well it's just across the road from my house. When i came out an old lady started chatting to me and she offered to help me across the road lol. I thanked her but said i would manage. I couldn't help laugh when i got in, probably this time last year i would have cried if that would have happened.

Anyway girls, take care and i will chat when i get home on saturday. xx

I'm surprised they've got you back on Humira. Isn't a sore throat is something you are have to watch for and are supposed to talk to your doctor about asap? If you have it tomorrow maybe you should call out of hours doctor to check.....?

I am super sore too from doing too much this week but I had a great time. Knees are quite swollen, from walking too far, as is my ring finger from an insect bite today.Don't know what variety but can't get my ring on and it looks very red and angry. Going to dig out some anti histamines in a min.

Isn't the weather fab though? Or is it where you are? I sat in the garden reading this afternoon and it was so relaxing.

I had a lovely time away. The River Tay was right in front of the hotel in Dunkeld (a lovely setting) we sat and enjoyed the sunshine under a parasol at the hotel yesterday. I couldn't believe the change in the weather when we reached Perth just 12 miles down the road, the sun had disappeared and it was cloudy all the way home. My feet have been very sore so that did spoil it a bit and my hands are swollen and sore. I am so envious of you all having the lovely warm weather, although it is dry today so that is a bonus, i think i must live in the wettest part of the country.

Glad to hear that you had a good time Marlene, it sounds a lovely place that you were.

Hope everyone's pain settles, take care xx

It is red and hot to-night, getting a little nervous as I have had cellulites (spelling) before and took weeks of anti-biotics to clear. Fingers crossed not that again. By the way don't confuse with cellulite I have that as well LOL

I hope it's not cellulitis Marlene, make sure you get to the doctor tomorrow. you made me laugh saying not to confuse it with cellulite, they do sound similar.

I am still very stiff and tired, I was in bed for 10pm last night and didn't get up til 10am, i was so shivery last night, that seems to be happening a lot when i just can't get heated up.

Hope you are ok bsk and hope your blood results improve Lynn,

Did you get to the doctor today Marlene?

I'm in the most grumpy mood having queued at the bank for 25 minutes, then for coffee for 10 mins (barista mucking about - I said 'can't you see I'm standing here with a walking stick?')) then in the shop for another 5. Then I talk on the phone to a customer services manager to sort something out and he was so rude to me we had an argument and he complained he had to listen to my 'diatribe.' More rudeness so complaint in the offing. Seem to be up against everyone today or is it just because I am trying to get stuff done and am finding it frustrating dealing with organisations?

Need to chill out and do a bit of meditating I think!

I know what you mean bsk, i hate waiting in queues. I would send an email to the head office and report the customer service manager, that is not customer service if he is being rude to you, especially a manager, no point in stressing yourself because of other people's rudeness though, some deep breathing, stress is not good for r/a. It is so wet and windy here, it is like winter. xx

Hi Rhona, it's pretty cold here too, though not wet. Just went out in sandals and froze.

I went one up from the manager and spoke to department head who told me someone is going to be on the receiving end of a diatribe from him lol! That comment restored my equilibrium somewhat.

Well my elbow is like a balloon and redness is twice the spread as yesterday and it turns out to be a Bursitis, because the red is infection and spread widely I am on Augmentin 500 anti-biotics and Dicloflex fingers crossed this doesn't affect my asthma. I have to go back Friday if its not any better.

I had a cat called Tammy, he was a big orange long haired tom and then i had Katie she was grey and white and was forever bringing birds and mice into the house, she was 17 years old when she died, we now have a dog, she is getting old now but she has a lovely nature.

Hope you are feeling a bit better today, i haven't been out today, just taking it easy (again)

Thanks everyone! The elbow is so sore to-day. I hardly slept last night just the duvet touching it had me cringing. I guess it will take a few days for it to feel better. My hubby is home until Saturday so at least I can rest it.
I don't need an excuse to not do ironing I hate it.
I am going out for dinner tommorrow just the two of us mum gets dinner at her club.
bsk I love cats although I have a dog. My cat was 19yrs when she died and I still miss her antics.
I bought my dog a toy to-day when I went to get my prescription. She was so delighted trotting round the garden. Animals have this special magic about them.
I am hoping to sleep better to-night.

Sorry to hear everyone is in pain. I felt very tired today . Woke up tired and never really got going. Expect it's the enbrel leaving my system. Back on it on Saturday so will see. Today is also anniversary of my mother's death so no doubt that is affecting me too. I miss her.

It will probably take a day or two til the antibiotics start to work Marlene, hopefully you will sleep tonight as you will be extra tired if you didn't sleep last night.

You reminded me of a funny story Marlene when you said your dog was trotting about the garden with her new toy. It was when my daughter was about 3 years old and she had a wee friend over to play, it had been the friends birthday the day before and she had been given a big white teddy bear as a present, after the girls had lunch they wanted to play in the garden i told Catherine to leave her teddy in the house as i was frightened it would get dirty in the garden, she wasn't too keen but i assured her i would look after it.

After about an hour or so she came indoors looking for it and there was no sign of it on the chair where it had been left, she was almost in tears, i couldn't understand it and went outside with them that's when i noticed our german shepherd dog Kara standing at some freshly dug earth, i started digging frantically with my hand and soon discovered the poor teddy, if it had been a few mins later i probably would never have seen it as we have a fairly large garden. I was just grateful the weather had been dry and the teddy was ok once dusted down. I couldn't believe she would bury something that big.

Hope you feeling ok Lynn xx

Hi Girls, I know what you mean Lynn, I'm just a bit sick of it all too.

I had OT come round, they were great actually, they ask you loads of questions and look at what & where you need help (with). I got recommendations for various things in the bathroom, kitchen and the gate at the front of my flat (which I couldn't open very well). I don't know your situation but there are grants available for some things and some things are free - like hand grab over the bath (which is the single most useful thing they did for me.)

Rhona, I'm sorry you're in such pain & Marlene too.

I'm feeling a bit better today, think my fatigue was just arthritis related.

Hi ladies saturday and feeling rough evry bone in my body is hurting. My hubby rang me from work and I just burst into tears, he said call a bloody ambulance. I felt terrible he was so worried. I called him back when the pain meds worked somewhat. Its not helping that the elbow is still keeping me awake and when I do sleep if i move it wakes me up. Its a little hard not to move with oa.
I am just trying to potter a bit and see if it helps. The anti-inflamms had my asthma playing up yesterday so am leaving them off to-day.
I don't usually cry its not me at all. I suppose I feel a bit sorry for myself.

Aw Marlene, i am so sorry to hear that, you must be feeling awful. I think you should call a doctor out to your house, if your elbow is not showing any improvement then you may need a different anti-biotic, i know you are used to pain but we all have our limits and i think it's now time you got some more treatment, don't allow things to get any worse.

I hope you get some relief soon sending you gentle hugs,

My elbow is still swollen but the fiery red has nearly all gone. I just totally rested to-day.
Snuggled up with my dog. When my hubby came home I said sorry for the tears while he was working and he said not to worry every one needs to let it all go from time to time and he would rather know how I feel, so he can help more (bless him)
Thanks Rhona and Bsk for you support it is so helpful when people know exactly where you are coming from.
