Hi Ann, Welcome to the forum. I hope you find the site as helpful as i have. I have had r/a for over 12 years and i also take plaquenil along with many other drugs. I would guess your rheumatologist will probably prescribe methetroxate and/or sulphasalazine as your next treatment and then your mobility should improve. Feel free to ask any questions, there is also a search button at the top of the page.

Hi Ann, I've had RA for nearly 17 years (since the age of 14). I'm relatively new to the forum too as I only discovered it a few weeks ago. Over the years I've had a number of different medications, but I am currently taking methotrexate, leflunomide and humira. My arthritis is now well controlled and I have quite an active lifestyle. I'm sure once they have sorted your medication things will imporve for you. Ruth

hi Ann , welcome to the forum , I had RA since 1996 , the drugs they have now can work very well & stop a lot of the damage RA can cause

as Rhona said , expect your next step is Methotrexate which is pretty standard for treating RA

checkout the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society website , they got help line if you need it + lot of information on there http://www.nras.org.uk/

hope you are feeling better soon

Take care Ann

Hi Ann, I live in sunny Scotland, we also have some lovely scenery, Loch Lomond is about a 45min drive away from where i live. I don't really follow any special diets i sometimes wonder if i cut out all wheat, sugar etc if it would make a difference. I found fish oil capsules helped a bit and i still take the odd glass of wine when i feel like it, i think we go through enough without denying ourselves of our little pleasures lol. My mobility has also been bad for a while now and i do find it difficult, especially when i enjoyed long walks, hopefully things will get better for us both. take care x

Hello Ann, I've got RA and had it for three years, though it was first diagnosed as inflammatory arthritis.

I know what you mean about getting bored when you can't get out and about. I read a lot. Also started a blog to keep myself amused but didn't publish it. Am thinking of starting another one but am hunting around for subject matter at the moment.

I am also learning Spanish and I draw as well. In the summer I sit out in the garden a lot and potter about. The winter is harder.
At the moment I am sleeping a lot as my arthritis is quite active and I get very tired. Oh and I also have learnt to meditate - great when you get bored or frustrated with your situation. The thing is not to get frustrated with what you can't do but enjoy what you can do.

When I first diagnosed my mum and I went to see a homoeopathist. He suggested some remedies and a diet that consisted of no red foods (strawberries, tomatoes etc), no white flour, no aspartame (artificial sweetener) or MSG. He also told me to take evening primrose oil (I'm vegetarian so cod liver oil was out). At this point my arthritis was very active, I was unable to attend school full time and if I was in particularly bad pain during the day I would sleep in the special needs unit. I didn't find the diet did anything. I think the only reason my RA is so well controlled is because I have an excellent rheumatologist at one of the best hospitals in the country and they finally got my medication right. It took a long time but we got here. I would be very cautious of any so called miracle cures, as they often prey on people who are desperate. When I was about 18 we tried a very expensive treatment that claimed to cure arthritis, which did absolutely nothing except cost my mum a lot of money. I like to read, watch TV or films, drawing and painting. Sleeping is still my go to thing for when I'm in pain (I think this was probably something I learnt when I was first diagnosed), but I always find when my arthritis is active I suffer from fatigue.
