Subject: Putting on Socks and fastening shoes - post op!

I had a total hip replacement in January which has meant a new lease of life for me. Unfortunately, I have difficulty in putting a sock and shoe on my "good" leg and cutting my toe nails, but find it impossible to do any of these things on my "bad" leg which has had the hip replacement. I rely on the sock putter-on for my sock and my husband to cut my toe nails and do up my shoe on my "bad" leg. Will I ever be able to be completely independent again?

Hi Edith, yes you will become totally independent give it time. My mum had a hip replacedment at the age of 75 two years ago.
She was back to total independence within a year. Good Luck and Take Care

Hi Edith
I don't know much about hip replacements but do know it takes time as Marlene says. Lucky you to have such a useful husband :)
Hope you get back to normal soon.

Hi Edith,

My mum-in-law had a knee replacement OP about 6 months ago...total mobility is still a problem but she is doing pretty good considering...There were quite a few patients in her physio class with hip replacement...My heart really goes out to you...Edith have your physio classes ended, did they not give you any exercises to carry on with?...Seems to me you need some specific exercises to create strength and flexibility in your muscles...Try and go back to see if you can see a physio and get some feedback on what can help you...though at 4 months it is still early days...Don't give up, it will get better...the exercises are very important to get back as much use of your leg as possible...All the best...x
