Subject: Omega-3 fish oil for arthritis

Does anyone take omega-3 supplements? Do they work for you? I have researched this and it has been suggested that it is only really helpful for RA, SLE and OA. Can anybody confirm any results with Fibro and PA?
I know that I canāt name sites but in the article Omega 3 and arthritis there is some very interesting information that talks about diet and what you can eat that will give you Omega-3, apparently we donāt make it ourselves. I was surprised to find that itās not just in fish!
Anyway I am rambling, a sorry tendency I have.

Hi Jayne
Another good source of Omega-3 is seeds such as Sunflower and Pumpkin seeds. Some health shops do a good mix. Great in muesli and tastier than fish oil :)

Hi Deborah
Great to hear that you are finding something that works. I have read about devils claw before and it is is one of the supplements I take - it is supposed to control gram negative bacteria in the gut.

Have you ever tried Boswellia?

Hi Deborah,
I'm just trying mtx - again. I had it about 3 yrs ago and it made me feel real off the day after and gave me a rash on my face. This time we are taking it slowly and getting my body to accept it a bit at a time. I have started with 7.5mg over 2 days. My specialist nurse is going to give me a call to up it to 10mg if she gets the okay from the consultant.

Doesn't the glucose make you put weight on though? I have been working hard on losing weight and wouldn't want to be putting any on with no nice flavours going with it lol.

Is your combo in a mix or do you just buy the omega-3, devils claw and glucose seperately?

Jayne , if your going on Mtx , you got to be very careful with any supplements , cod liver oil/omega 3 & glucose will be fine

dont understand what they are doing with Mtx over two days , most take it one day a week & folic acid on the other days , I am on 25mg & been on Mtx 14 years

Hi Deborah,

Glad to hear that your doing ok off the mtx and trying omega-3 etc. Can i ask you why you are taking glucose though? i thought glucose was a sugar and from what i have read sugary food is bad for arthritis. I have just started taking my fish oil capsules again as i found they did help also evening primrose is helpful.

Hi Jayne,
How are you?.Sorry did not see your post earlier. It is just glucosamine 500mg not glucose sorry I just shortened the word. The combo I am taking is bought separately.

Just wanted to say that I am not taking mtx at the moment so if you decide to take any supplements check first with the chemist as some can affect the drugs you are taking and can be dangerous esp mtx.

I am on arcoxia 90 mg daily along with paracetamol 500mg 4 a day 500mg glucosamine 3 daily, devils claw 750mg 1 daily, omega 3 fish oil 1000mg daily and to be honest feel much the same as when on 25mg of mtx only difference is my joints are noticably more painful but at least I am not sick for three days a week like I was before and even for the week after the injection felt quite painful and really tired plus quite sick as well.

I was always really well on the mtx up to the 20mg dose but then had to go up to the 25mg as the lower dose was not as effective but when I changed up I never noticed any great difference if anything it felt like I was not on any medication at all.

But the rhummy nurse has warned me that I will take a bad flare-up after a few weeks of being off the mtx but I will just wait and see so far so good.

I need to find an alternative as my skin is so painful were I get my jab (pa affects the skin as well) and as all the bio-logics are injections the future does not look to bright but hopefully things will keep working.

Hope you find the mtx helps you I hope so take care.

Hi rhona,
Thankyou. How are you? do hope you are ok at the moment.
Sorry I just shortened the word it is glucosamine 500mg capsules I am taking sorry for the confusion.

I think the fish oil capsules have been very good so far so hopefully they will keep helping us both.

Also meant to say that in the morning I would be stiffer and have more pain but once I take my meds I feel much the same as before so far anyway.

Take care both of you Deborah xx.

Hi Deborah, I'm not too bad today thanks although yesterday i could hardly move. I stopped the enbrel injections a few weeks ago as they were not helping at all. in fact i felt worse on them and have now got swollen hands which i didn't have before. It is very hard as you know getting something that helps without all the nasty side effects. It has been recommended that i go onto Rituximab infusions but i am still thinking about that one. I tried glucosamine years ago but they didn't help me with the r/a, i have read it is osteo arthritis that they help don't know about PA i didn't think they helped inflammatory diseases but if you find they help then that's the main thing. I hope you stay as pain free as possible until you see the hospital again. I have found that massages help wish i could have one very day. take care xx
