Subject: remission question

Hi all. Just wondered if anyone can tell me, if you can get into remission, do you still need to take meds or can meds be stopped. Just curious. Thanks, Rich

Hi Rich, i have had R/A for over 11 years, when i first started sulphasalazine the rheumy nurse said i was probably in remission as my ESR was low but she said if i came off the drug it would probably flare so i stayed on it and did well for a while. As the years went on i have had more and more drugs added. i guess the best thing would be to follow the advise of the hospital and if you are in remission you may not need too much in the way of drugs. good luck.

Hi Rich, that remission thing is tricky. Some doctors say you are in remission when the drugs are working well, which I would call controlled. I had one dr say I was in remission when there was no evidence of inflammation in my joints, in spite of the fact they were noticably swollen and painful. My nurse said I wasn't in remission, though I didn't need her to tell me that!

To add to what Rhona has said, I have read an article, I think on Arthritis Research website, talking about studies that have been done that potentially show that some anti tnfs can be reduced after a period of time and still be very effective at controlling the arthritis.

Thanks all for feedback. Just to answer colin i`m not 100% sure what remission is but you can probably get an idea from the answers i`ve been given above. I have Rheumatoid and have been told that remission is when you have treated your illness to the point when it is not active anymore, which is why I was wondering if you still need meds. I`m not at that point but was just curious to know as I`ll look forward to the day when maybe I don`t need to keep taking all these meds. I appreciate its a very awkward and open question to answer. Thanks everybody. Hope ya all ok.

Rich , I have had RA for long time now 17 years , people vary , my sister got it mindish , she sometimes has to take NSAIDs but can work full time , myself had to give up job within few months & need opperations on several joints & know down the line there will be several more

every one is different , long term try protect your joints from damage as there is new drugs coming out & hope one day they will find cure/treatment that you can live normal life
