Subject: Could it be arthritis?

Hiya, new here. Try to keep it short. My mother has RA and got it in her late 30's. She now has severe deformity of both hands, and can't walk.

I have been v careful to watch out for signs and i try to be good to myself. I excercise 3 times a week but have had to stop my aerobics and running as my knees are to sore.

I have had psoriasis since i was a child but it settled down for years. After having my second child 2 lyears ago i developed severe pnd and was hospitalised for 4 months. I received lithium which immediately aggravated my psoriasis. It is mainly on my scalp but spreading.

For the past 2 months i have been feeling v stiff and just not right and for the past 3 weeks i have gradually go so sore that i cant sleep at nite. I cant hold my bike handle without pain, i cant carry the shopping, and my shoulder is agony. i feel like crying right now as i have no idea what is wrong with me.

Have been refered to rhemotology but could be 3 months. The doc has given me no info. I don't know if it maybe RA or even psoriatic arthritis or none of these? My nails on my toes have started to come off one is off altog which is a symton of psoriasis.

Any advice welcome. And yes that was me keeping it short lol

It sounds very much like it to be honest. What you need to do is get some calcium into you (and your mother). It's best to use the liquid type and it comes with Vitamin D in it and also in soft gel capsuls. These can be bought in any pharmacy or health food shop.

Also I would recommend an oil called Elmore Oil. It is the best in Australia for arthritis and muscular pain relief and also good for psoriasis. It is available in the UK now and I use it on my knees and hands. Google it and read more about it before you buy any. It has a full 14 day refund if not happy and it is 100% natural thus can be taken with any medication already taken. Hope this helps you out. Your mother sounds like she could do with some Elmore Oil for her hands and legs.

Thanks so much. I have heard of elmore oil and my sister and I mentioned it to mum, but to be honest she seems to have lost the will to try new meds. i will go and research all you have said when the kids go down tonite. thanks again i appreciate your reply. Shoulder got better but has come on again, hubby isn't convinced and things it is a trapped nerve but it doesnt explain all my other joints. i just want to know one way or another. also does anyone know if i should stop excercising. have been for a swim today as i know this is gentler on joints?

Hi Nikki,

It does sound like you could have arthritis. And yes it does sound like it could be 'Psoriatic Arthritis' This is a type of arthritis which causes inflammation in and around the joints, usually in people who already have the skin condition psoriasis. Have a look at this website, it has loads of information about the condition.

http://www.arc.org.uk/arthinfo/patpubs/6029/6029.asp

As with all arthritis exercise is good as it keeps the joints mobile but it is very difficult to exercise when you are having a flare up so if the exercise is making you have more pain and stiffness ease back on it for a while until you get your condition diagnosed and have started on treatment. However, having said that, swimming is very good as it doesn't put stress on the joints. I think the trick is to listen to your body.

I have always found it's good to be very direct with GPs etc. Next time you see your GP make sure you let them know how this is impacting your day-to-day life and ask if they can make an early appointment to see a rhumatologist. It sounds to me like you do need to see someone as soon as possible. Don't just put up with all the pain and the worry of not knowing what is happening to you, let your GP know you need some help.

Good luck with it all - let us know how you get on...

Hi Nik,

Sorry to hear about all your problems and I would agree with Trina. I have been suffering for many many months now and after eventually seeing a consultant am still no further on. He said osteoarthritis but was not giving me a prescription till he had seen results of various tests. Over two weeks later I am still waiting. I phoned hospital today to try and hurry them along and was told it may be another two weeks before I hear anything. I explained I am in a serious amount of pain and was told to phone back on Thursday! Will see what happens then! My point is (as I am learning the hard way,) we really do have to be forceful when dealing with the medical profession and when you see the rhuematologist make sure you have written everything down you want him to know and don't leave without being satisfied with the outcome. It does sound like your GP is more on the ball than mine. Best wishes to you and your mum.
