Subject: Methotrexate

Hi, Happy New Year to everyone here.
I have a question regarding MTX. I have bee taking it for over a year now along with Sulphasalazine. I believe it is helping but I am getting really fed up with the side effects. I feel sick for a good part of the day, it's random as in no particular time of day, it just comes and goes anytime day or night and it's now interfering with daily life. That and the fact I am losing or maybe I shold say my hair is thinning quite a bit which I find disturbing to say the least!! I am on 40mg a week of mtx and I take folic acid 6 days a week. Is there some alternative to MTX out there which maybe does not have these side effects? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Sandie, That seems a very high dose of MTX, i am on 25mg and i thought that was the highest dose you could take. I take MTX, sulphasalazine and plaquenil, i found the plaquenil very helpful for about 4 years but i have now started Anti TNF therapy. I would speak to your rheumy team and ask their advise as with as with a lower dose of MTX you probably wouldn't have the side effects. good luck x

Sandie normal for arthritis is between 7.5mg & 20mg & would question the strenght your on

Folic Adic will help with hair thinning & liver problems , I take 5mg tablets 6 times a week & helped a lot , not on day of mtx & dont have to much problem with it

I would question why youre on such high dose & ask to go on a Anti TNF drug like Enbrel

Hi Rhona and Colin, thank you for your replies. I feel such a fool, I don't know why I put 40mg when it is in fact 20mg per week - oops, however it still does not take away the other facts and I will look into Anti TNF therapy. Thank you both again.
