Subject: Really scared!

I have been told I have got to have a knee replacement but they have now said they do this without a general anaesthetic and I am so scared. I am such a coward I have to be sedated at the dentist! Has anyone else on here had surgery whilst awake?

Yes my sister in law had her knee replaced while awake, she said it was fine felt nothing at all and no side affects with not being put to sleep ! she was up standing the next day said she would not hesitate to have the other one done the same way if needed . they will give you a mild sedative just to keep you calm hope this helps

Thanks for the responses - it is the thought of being able to hear everything that is happening I just don't think I can lay there. I had my hip done last year but had a general for that.

Gill, you need to tell your surgeon how you feel. I am sure he will understand and help you through. I had a small op with a local, it was painless just as they said. Most of the time my surgeon was talking about his night out so it took my mind off of it, he also chatted with me about nothing really. They do know people are nervous and are very clever at taking your mind off it. Good Luck.
