Subject: Methotrexate and Alcohol

I just wanted to ask if anybody has had any problems after drinking alcohol while on Methotrexate. The reason I ask is because i`m a nightworker and have been for 10+ yrs. The trouble is when you force yourself to stay awake so often, its hard to get to sleep on your nights off and i`ve always combated this by having a good drink to knock me out. The only trouble is this goes against everything we`re told about Methotrexate and now i`m starting to worry about liver damage as i`m getting an aching right where my liver is. I get my bloods done every 4 weeks and all seems ok and I only drink 2 nights of the week when i`m on my nights off. I`ve tried herbal sleeping tablets like Nitol but they don`t work for me and doctors don`t like to give out sleeping tablets. Just for the record I will drink about 6 cans of 4% lager on a night off and that usually makes me sleepy enough to sleep at night.
I`m just worried that its the long term damage that will cause me problems in the future.
Any advice is welcomed,Thanks, Richard

Hi Richard i asked the same question about 2 months ago and loads of people came back with a variety of opinions - but it appears many people drink alcohol whilst on Metx, some were a bit nauseous, some had quite a bad reaction. The fact that your blood is monitored is good because if it is impacting on your liver, I think they will be able to tell you.

I think it really depends on the person as when I was decided between Metho or sulpha I was told by the Rhumy that was safer to drink on Sulpha, however a DR friend of mine said his brother is on Metho and drinks.

I dont think his brother drinks much though compared to the amount I could polish away on Sulpha..

I havent drank in nearly a year though now on no meds as really dont miss it and until everything is sorted dont want to attempt it.

Majority of meds say dont drink and there has only ever been 2 ive not touch anything alcohol based even mouthwash because of the severe reactions.

The aching in the liver area could be that you just need more fluids i.e water or juice and not alcohol to flush your system out.

Try drinking couple pints of water etc a day and see if that helps.

Specialists always say dont drink and will damage the liver but thats why we get blood tests and if they are all clear then should be ok as long as you dont drink excessive every night.

Hi,

I was one of those mads is refering to about previous discussion. I drink over 50 units a week and have been on MTX for 9 months now. I also get the ache in Liver area which I was worried about but my ALT has been staedy between 50-70.

I have been planning to cut down and also stop mTX but situation currently is difficult.

I also forget to take folic all the time.

I'm just a very laid back character who generally doesn't worry about things. Each to their own. Any questions feel free to ask

Cheers

Well I guess we going to die of something ?!? where has that Martini bottle gone ...

Oh that's a terrible reply, I once drank a bottle or two of wine at a xmas party whilst on Methotrexate believe me it was more like halloween the next day.

Try having a nice radox bath, none caffine warm drink and maybe some naughty time ? Hope this helps or at least makes you smile ; )

Well I drink was told by my specialist nurse it was alright as long as my alt (liver function) test is OK. She told me that if it reached to dizzy heights of 70 they would then show some concern and I would have to stop drinking and see what happens. It's never been over 30 (last Christmas) and last month it was 11. I do have the odd drink most nights, some more that others. I am not saying everyone is OK to drink while taking MTX. This was the nurse telling me looking at my blood results from the previous two years before I started taking MTX, I was and still am taking SLZ. I take 20mg MTX a week and I take 6 SLZ everyday. If I was you I would check with your hospital first.

Thanks everybody for the feedback, my mind is at rest. I`m just gonna keep doing what I`ve always done unless theres any change in bloods. I reckon if the whole forum went to a pub, there`d be more people at the bar than not. A nice radox bath sounds even better with nice cold beer...yep, you made me smile too. Cheers all. Hic!
