Subject: about to start mxt
hi guys was at hospital on frid and after a long discusion with my consultant she decided i should try mxt im not keen at all but have been in so much pain lately that i am willing to give it a go, i aslo had a injection into my shoulder joint on the day which was painful!!! im due to start tabs next week, i had a chest xray and bloods taken at hospital and will get a few vaccines from gp at start of week then i should be good to go i know there are alot of nasty side effects i have just recently been taken off sulphasalazine beacause of my wbc and had rash all over so heres hoping this might help me!!! any tips on it would be great!!!!!x

Hi Lynn,
Here are some tips I was given from on here.
Take on a full stomach.
Preferably early evening
Drink plenty of water.
If you feel a bit of nausea then nibble a ginger biscuit.
I have felt really good on MTX so cant complain, although I have found if I have chinese food on the day of the MTX i do feel as rough as anything..

hey, try not to worry but make sure you remember your folic acid and if you get any side effects see your GP and have a word about taking your folic acid every day appart from the MTX day. if you have to do this you will find the side effects can get much better.
Also if the nausa becomes troublesome you can get anti sickness meds which work and if after all that the tablets dont agree with you it is possible to move onto the injectable form of MTX.
A lot of people never have a problem with it so good luck and try not to worry :) x

Hi Lynn Ive been on methotrexate for over a year now and the difference is massive. I have two young children and work so you can imagine how hard it can be. I was in agony at first and had loads of steroid injections etc. I was in terrible constant pain. It took about 3 - 4 months for the methotrexate to kick in so you REALLY DO have to BEAR WITH IT. I was tempted to give up with it and try something new a few times but im so glad now that I stuck with it. I take 20mg by tablet form. I take it at night as otherwise I get a really bad headache on the day. I also drink wine now and again on it and dont have any problems. I also take quite a lot of other medication aswell. Give it time hopefully it will work. I think too many people give up on it after 3 - 6 weeks and that is far too early. You do feel a bit "off and sickly" at first but it wears off after a while and the doctors check my blood every month to make sure my body is coping with it. Hang in there - it will definitely get better. My readings of ESR and CRP were sky high at first and I was more or less bed bound and crying in pain. Im also a firm believer in having a good state of mind and staying positive. Too many people let RA take over their lives and then it eats you up. Believe me I have had an horrendous time so anyone thinking "Oh she cant have had it as bad as me" is wrong because I have. But with the right medication and state of mind you'll get on top of it. I still have really crap days here and there but they are very few and far between now. Good luck - really hope it works for you.x

i am on the injectable form and i inject myself once a week. It isnt as frightening as you think as its over and done with quickly.
You might never have to do it so dont worry :)
