im 24 have RA and am on MTX (20mg) and pain meds. Also have fibromyalgia. I have been having very irregular periods, comming every 2 or 3 months, then very painful, heavy and prolonged when they do come. im also getting spots, which i havnt had since i was 17. Very dry skin on my face. Thinning hair (im putting that one down to MTX). What im wondering is anyone else having similar problems? could it be the arthritis? im going to speak to the doc but am curious to know if its common or not.

hi Kirst i,m also on 20 mg of mtx have been taking it for a yr or so now and i only get a period every few month or so but when they come they r extremley light barely worth having which i might add is a god send lol... although i am 44 and haveing other strange things going on i,m thinking i,m going into the menapause, the Dr thinks i could be right but thats a guess a best ...... regarding the spots i did get quiet a few when i first went on mtx , but the dr upped my folic acid to 2 a week instead of one and that seams to have sorted that always worth a try .... i think MTX just does some weired and wonderfull things to a body we either roll with it or try somthing else ,either way it not good lol.... have a good day tc x

Hi Kirst I have had trouble with my periods which were previously fine. But for a few months before I was diagnosed they became irregular and light. I wasn't on any medication then. I also had very dry skin on my face. I put this all down to my psoriatic arthritis.

Hi Kirst I'm on 20mg MTX and have been for 6 months. I've had the hair thinning, really dry skin on hands and my periods have become more dragged out but one momth lighter and the next month really heavy and they seem to be much more painful now. I'm 41 and not sure if its menopausal or the MTX. I also get thrush a day after my MTX day and this has only started since taking the MTX. Oh the joys !!!

Oh gosh methotrexate, what a medication and am sure when it came out for arthritis the old media do what they love to do and hyped it as a miracle cure hahaha. Geesh. Anyway yes this sounds all too familiar to me, I had some very odd effects on methotrexate and yes irregular periods was one such effect followed by exceptionally heavy periods. I would always talk to the doc though because obviously there are all sorts of reasons to have this. Can I ask do you feel methotrexate works? Just curious really as am wondering if I should give it a go, when I was a teen I gave it a year and got fed up with the symptoms and demanded something new. When I was 8 I just hid it in my squirrel Ps case as I hated the side effects of making me tired in school and sick. Happy days hahahaha. My PJ case often rattled, how naughty was I! Good luck at the docs but if it puts your mind at ease many arthritic drugs can play its games with the old periods, steroids can do it too and I am sure other women have had other things that do similar antics. x
