Can anyone please help or offer some advice as my mum is desperate for some relief from her chronic oesotarthritis/ rhemutoid arthritis, she is already taking Transdermal patches, prednisolone,Alendronic acid, and Solpadol, she has been to doctors and a consultant, and none of these treatments work, Any suggestions would be most welcome

If she is getting any nerve pain tony Gabapentin is excellent. However I'm in the same position with my OA and sometimes the Solpadol is useless. Could she ask to be referred to a pain clinic ?

Has your mum tried the Hydro Pool yet? The warm water and gentle excercise with a physio is great. Pain killers are trial and error i feel. I use Tramacet and Co-Dyramol. Your mum must go back to her consultant or GP and tell them how bad her pain is and the fact her painkillers are not working. Send your mum my best wishes and i hope she feels better real soon.

the pain clinic is definatly worth a try, you have to judge for yourself i think you'll always hear other peoples opinions if things dont go right but seldome if things work out. the problem is some painkillers block others for working and gp's arnt always the right people to look at pain specifically. definatly work asking ofr a referal to a pain clinic x

Hi Tony. What dose of prednisolone is she on? I find upping the dose releaves the pain when I have a flair up. My normal dose is 10mg per day, I increase to 40mg when the pain gets to bad, I also take arcoxia 90mg per day they work well for me. Dell

I take Dihydracodeine 2 x 30mg 4 hourly + 600mg Gabapentin 3 x per day. I find the codeine quite effective for the general achiness (mostly) - but I'm not finding the Gabapentin overly effective in treating the shooting nerve pain. Apparently that can be upped again, so maybe it will improve. I still have to depend on good old morphine when the pain gets rediculous. I don't know if anyone else out there starts throwing up when their pain crosses a certain threshold. When that happens I use morphine suppositories.

i've tried loads of painkillers and anti-inflammatories. aside from prednisolone, the best i've found are co-dydramol for pain and volsaid retard for inflammation - its a long acting diclofenac and i take it at night, to try and reduce my morning stiffness. I've not had any stomach problems from the diclofenac thankfully. I'm on week 15 of mtx and i think im noticing improvements as i havent had to take codydramol in a couple of weeks !
good luck, as the others have said, its lots of trial and error!

Kayjay,

Amytryptiline is a drug used to treat depression. Does it also treat arthritis pain?

Taffyn.

Taffyn it's primarily an anti depressant med BUT it seems to work in smaller doses for nerve pain. I couldn't sleep for the pain in my neck due to Osteoarthritis [ which used to spark off humungous Migraines !! ] and the Amies sorted that out for me. My sister takes it for depression and her previous neck pain has gone now !!

Hi Tony. You asked what my ailments are: I started with Osteochondritis as a child (age 12). As an adult this deteriorated into osteoarthritis and now I've been diagnosed with additional rheumatoid + fibromyalgia.

I take Tramadol + Naproxen for pain and then take Lansoprosol for any stomach issue that the meds might cause and they seem to work great for me atm

I also take the sulphasalazine and mirtazapine (depression)

However i might not be classed as having severe pain.

The only drawback to the Tramadol is it can give quite severe side effect and withdraw symptoms when you stop or miss dose for 24hrs

dont think tramadol with codeine is allowd (ment to be a definete no no). Ive always been told to take any tramadol with paracetamol. and the same for codeine (always take with paracetamol), the combination enhances the effect it has on the nerve pain signals (or so the pain management nurse tells me).
hope thats helpful :)

hi Tony
i take Brufen Retard slow release 800mg x2 per night (anti inflam)
Oxycontin 20 mg mornings 12hr slow release, and 15mg at night.(pain relief)
oxynorm 5mg x2 as when i need to top up pain relief ,
and then paracetmol x2 4 hrly,
but as i said the pain killers i take r not the first stage of relief ur DR may try lots of others befor u get to these type of drugs ,
just keep going back to ur Dr with mum and tell them , stress how much pain she is in ... but with out a firm dianosis, it may mean going to a pain clinic to help manage her pain ,... tc x
