Subject: why are DLA so hard to deal with

I filled forms in for mobility allowance. On my worst days i travel in a mini cab living in London the transport system is busy and escalaters often are out. I am not able to deal with being knocked and pushed around (i know people are in a hurry and im so bloody slow) My husband is the only wage earner and he works hard 12hour shifts no way am i asking him to do overtime. I thought if a was given a mobility allowance to help with the never ending cost of cabs life would be a little easier. Anyway filled all forms in a they gave me the lowest care componant. What happened to mobility i applied for???? I am hoping the guy i have an appointment with on the 7th april can show me where i went wrong. Every one i talk to tells me did you know this one and that one gets mobility. I dont understand how the system works. I have always worked up until 5years ago im 60 now. I worked to help with the cost of my three kids, they were my responsibilty. LOL maybe because i have never worked the system this is why i dont have a clue. Sorry to moan so much. When i read on this site how so many of you have to fight for help you deserve it makes me fuming. I have support from my family and some days i still feel pretty much alone and sorry for my self is this normal????? Thanks for letting me let off steam. XX

hi marlene the only way to answer your question is to say that they don't understand arthritis and how it affects us.
do you use walking aid? how far can you walk without pain? these are the questions they want to know about for mobility, for me before using crutches i could walk about 10 meters before i had pain and had to stop and they turned me down, so i asked for them to look at it again and then they gave me it.

good luck and depending on what you said it means you can also ask for them to look at it before going to trial.

Hey Kazzie. The thing to remember with mobility is that even on your good days you are probably not going to be the same as a fully mobile person. My situation is variable - but I put that I can walk 0 metres. Even though you may be doing better on your meds - you still have a disability.
Another thought: maybe we should become more like the Americans. Let them turn us down .. and then because we don't have appropriate care or mobility support something happens (e.g., we fall) ... then sue the buggers as being responsible for causing our accident. Hmmm ... maybe they wouldn't be so quick to turn people down if we all did that!! POWER TO DA PEOPLE!!!!

I think I would seek legal advice on this one, to be honest. The person who told them that might have been trying to be malicious. Get a letter from your GP or rheumy or whichever medical person knows you best and appeal. I think that is awful. I am seriously starting to think there is a DLA attack going on. The number of people I am having to help in my job with DLA appeals etc is just staggering.

i had a phone call from welfare rights to-day. I found her hard to follow. I have an appointment with her on the 7th april. She was telling me everything is changing in 2012 something called PIP. Has anyone heard of this (something else i have to research) anyway i am sure she was trying to advise me not to fight for mobility and a higher rate of care. She kept saying as you know the goverment are making cuts you know. You might lose what you already have. I said where does that leave people like me, her reply was take it up with the goverment. I thought she was supposed to be on my side. Well i am up for a challenge on the 7th. Going for a full body bone scan to-morrow like i need someone like her putting me on a bigger downer. She also said they are stopping mobility altogether!! Does anyone out there know what this is all about. I am totally at a loss as to what to do.

Hi Marlene. I've just sat and read the white paper and numerous of the consultation docs. Go to CAB and ask them to help you fill out your appeal form. Get yourself onto the highest rates possible now, before the changes begin to be implemented in 2013. The gov white paper indicates that they will continue to work with motability for those in receipt of higher level mobility. Don't live in fear hon. Fight the battle when it happens - not now. My hope is that within a few years elections will recur - and I sincerely doubt that anyone in their right mind will vote this rediculous government in again.

Hi gaynor, The info i got was from a referral from the CAB in my area they send you to welfare rights office as CAB dont deal with the forms. I have found a phone number for DLA and before i fill forms in again i am going to talk to the help team. Then a phone call to my consultant to find out results of total bone scan i had to-day. Then watch this space no way am i going to give up. I had the injection in the top of my foot ouch! Just another pain! I am under the influence of tramadol trying to numb the pains after being laid in a position that just kills my back. Hey ho thats life. At least hopefully i should get a result of what is going on with all the new joint pains.Anyway back to DLA if i just get the mobility to help with the cost of travel to hospital. It costs a fortune when you have a friend like arthur living off your back (LOL).

I just phoned DLA spoke to a really nice guy, very helpful. Now im going to fill out forms. I hope this time they might take into account all my problems not just my shoulder. Never mind all the cut backs. When i finished work it was to look after my mum, saved them a good few shillings i know. Bless her last year she fell and broke her hip. She had a full hip replacement. I had to battle with them not to send her home to me until she was able to look after herself. It wasnt until i showed a nurse my 6" scar from my back op that all the stops were pulled out to send her to a rehabiltitation centre just a few miles away. I must say they were brilliant. She also had 6wks after care at home for showers and dressing. Sice leaving work i had a pacemaker fitted after passing out twice the second time i smashed my face breaking 4 teeth and stitches inside mouth. I looked like id had a fight with mike tyson. once i got over all that i had my back surgery which cured my siatica but caused other problems. I was told we cant fix everything. I do realise this but it doesnt stop me from hurting and feeling very low at times. Thank god for a good hubby and kids. Id be lost without them. Well here goes forms here i come. By the way i know what you mean about the migraines.

Amen on the good partner and kids front. What would we do without them. My partner is disabled too - which is very helpful. We understand each other's difficulties completely. It's like the blind leading the blind some days. Off we go with our respective walking aids. We joke around about having walker races before we are too much older. It does make a big difference to have people around you who love you - even the bits that don't work right. Marlene I am cringing with you about your fall - that sounds absolutely horrid. You poor thing. Ouch!!!

My husband has bad knees and the other day we passed a mobility shop, mobility scooters all in a row . He said we will have one each when i get the money but his is going to be super duper go faster. So i will still be left behind LOL.The fall was pretty rough but the dentist bill £436 for a plate with 3 false teeth was more than rough. For a decent set of nashers i had to go private. This is all part of the reasons i am not going to get pushed aside by DLA. I filled forms out to-day and posted them. Im on a mission by the end of the form my writing was like my 9 year grandsons. My hands were killing me, which made me even more determined. I made a little reminder note that i am also requesting Mobility. Good on you and your partner. Its refreshing to hear people have support. I feel sad when i read about the ones who have to cope alone. I count my blessings for the support i have.
