Subject: Hello - Welcome To My Roundabout

Hi All

Im new on here, hello to all.
Im 42 and have had osteochondritis since age of 18. Had ops in teens and 20's, 30's to remove loose bodies and when first got diagnosed was told by time i reached age 40 would need new knee. So got to age of 40 and knee on the whole wasnt bad, had iffy spells but on the whole okay. I decided to start a health kick, exercising every day, brisk walk for an hour a day....Then a few weeks into this pain got worse, and i couldnt walk properly, knee gave way regularly and pain was helish. Went to see gp they said would refer me to ortho, had arthroscopy last year, made it worse. Surgeon would only consider taking out kneecap, wouldnt give me success rates on it so i decided not to go for it....Sought 2nd opinion and at first new man was good but now after notes from old surgeon he has branded me overweight and too young....He wont tell me what he considers is reasonable amount of weight to lose, i am on a diet, seeing dietician and swimming more but neither surgeon nor gp will give me goals to aim for...am i making sense? What does he consider reasonable loss, i know he judges me now as unreasonable.....My own gp today said i was focusing on negative how is weight loss, dietician and swimming that?
Ive had 2nd opinion and feeling very let down and sick of banging my head against brick wall....

Commments welcome.....

Thank

hi Tarnlake

You can work out what your body mass index should be (BMI). If you google it you can find sites that will calculate it for you on height and weight.

Also, I think, though might be wrong, that Weight Watchers talk about loosing 5% of total body weight so that is another way you can guage things.

Hope this helps. I know my mother, who couldn't exercise at all due to severe osteoarthritis, said it was almost impossible to lose weight without starving yourself so don't beat yourself up about it. Just plod away - sounds like the swimming and diet should work for you.
Good luck.

Hi

Well I know about the BMI but it states I should ideally weigh 10 stone which the last time I weghed that i was in my teens....Ive always been bigger, size 18 now 20.....Id love to be able to weigh less but I have for the most part of my life been as active as I can. I can now barely walk 25 yards or more, i can swim at my local hydro pool but even then my knee locks and is painful.....I also got told by second opinion man that even if I halved what I ate I still wouldnt lose enough weight. Someone else told me becuase i cant exercise to get my heart pumping sufficiently enough to burn calories its going to be very hard.
I have stage 4 OCD and want my life back but it seems they are quite happy to let me try and get to age 65 (23years) till they would do something....I bet that if i make it that long I will be too old, no, knowing my luck I'll kick the bucket aged 63!!! Im joking of course but I kind of feel medical people could be more constructive with their words.....

Thanks for reply....
