Subject: Anyone had an Isotope scan ?

Just got back from the Rheumie and all my bloods and xrays are normal however I've got pain and swelling in hands and feet so they are at a bit of a loss as to what's up ? Mentioned it could be Fibromyalgia BUT I said Fibro isn't inflammatory but Nurse said it is ? Even more confused now than ever as last Jan they told me I had Inflammatory Arthritis ?

Anyway got to have a full body Isotope scan and just wanted to know if others have had this ? as I don't know whether to just call it a day and just live with the pain and symptoms as this scan just seems a waste of time to me.

I think I had one when I was 16, am now 32. I've had juvenille idiopathic arthritis since the age of 11 months. If its the one I had you get injected from a distance with a radioactive isotope and then have to drink 2 litres of water. Anyone who is with you or visits you for 48 hours has to sit a metre away as you remain radioactive! The scan is harmless and didnt take too long and the best bit is you get to wear a radioactive bracelet! The scan didnt help me with treatment or diagnosing any other conditions but it may help you. Its worth it just incase and its not so bad. Good luck x

I wouldnt worry too much KayJay, I had one because a junior doctor decided I didnt have arthritis and it must be something else! They couldnt find anything else so concluded I did have arthritis! Its painless but as you said not common practice thats why not many people have had them! We must be special!

Have got my appointment for 19th Jan. The letter says I have an Isotope injection then wait for 2 hours and the scan will take 1 hour. I'm not supposed to be in close contact with any pregnant ladies or children. Has anyone had one of these before besides the lovely Lucy please ?

Hi,
i had one of these back in September and its really nothing at all.
they inject you with radioactive and scan you two hours later.
painless and it just confirms what your issues are, i thought i was a hypocondriac prior to having this done and it just confirmed all my pains were for a reason.
good luck.

showed an increased uptake in ankles and also wrists which confirmed basiclly that there was alot going on as far as the pa goes.
this will also help in future fights for example DLA to prove that your pains are real in my view, it also shows if anything else is out of the ordanairy in your body.
my bloods showed hi crp levels and low vitamin d.
hope it helps

Had the Isotope scan yesterday and it was okay. The only thing I didn't like was when I had to have my head scanned and the machine came so close to my eyes and my shoulders were enclosed it felt like I was in a coffin !! and had to drink 2 pints of fluid before it. But it wasn;t an invasive test so it's all good. Should know the outcome on the 19th Feb. Will see what happens. I have a feeling that it will be normal which is good but I will still be at a loss what's up with me except for the Fibromyalgia diagnosis from my GP.

Good you've had it done! Hopefully it may give you some news x I've got a bust week next week - steroid infusion at the day unit monday and wednesday and CT scan to see if I've fused Tuesday! Maybe I'll be out dancing by the weekend lol!
