Subject: Arthrodesis on ankle

Hello, my mother (aged 66) has bad arthritis in her ankle (and elsewhere). The ankle pain gets so bad that she becomes immobile and cannot walk. This is particularly bad as she is diabetic and needs to keep mobile.

She has today seen an orthopedic consultant who has told her the only solution is for her to have an arthrodesis procedure. We can find lots of information on the web about what the procedure is and its technicalities but nothing from people who have had this procedure. It sounds very drastic (fusing the joint with metal pins to make the bones immobile so preventing them rubbing against each other and causing pain; off feet for three months afterwards) and we would like to find out if it works and what the pros and cons are. Hoping someone here can help. With many thanks.
