Subject: RA CAUSING NUMBENESS/PINS AND NEEDLES

Has anyone suffered from numbness and pins and needs (parasthesia) in their hands as a result of RA? I would be really grateful to hear from you as ive developed it as a result of the RA inflaming nerves etc and its horrendeous and painful to have this aswell as RA - I cant even lift a fork to eat my dinner without my hands going numb.

hi, has anyone mentioned carpal tunnel to you? that causes numbness in the hands due to inflammation around the median nerve, i have RA and get it but more so in the night,am going for a nerve conduction test next week, not sure what can be done about it but know that surgery is an option

I was diagnosed with carpul tunnel 5 years ago but only recently been diagnosed with sero neg inflam arthritis Ive just had my second lot of nerve tests after having a failed op 5 years ago I will admit the pain is horrendus but is only occasional ie at night or doing certain things and not constant 24/7 you should get it checked out with your doc as athena said its related to inflamation/ excessive weight gain around the median nerve

I'm constantly woken up in the night by pains in my arms which have gone to sleep / are numb / are dead - I can't quite explain what it feels like. I get pins & needles in my feet when I'm sitting still but my hands only seem to suffer when my arms go funny...my GP has tested me for DVT as I'm getting throbbing pains in my calves....its all really horrible and unnerving but GPs and Rheumy specilists just nod their heads and say 'its the RA' - makes me wonder if thats what caused the BP oil well disaster and the worldwide economic crisis......???!!

hi, i thought you could get trapped nerves in your feet which react the same as the hands, cant remember what its called now tho, but RA can cause numbness and tingling in feet too,i get it when im driving or sitting too long but its completely different to how it is in my hands.

thing what worries me is that what if we get something that isnt related to RA? will the dr's just assume its related and not examine us properly, surely everything we are going to get in the future cant always be related to RA.

lol at scaryfeet saying about the BP oil well disaster, that made laugh :)

i read it somewhere about getting it in the feet but cant remember where now but am sure nerves can get trapped by inflammation in the feet as well as hands,i often get it in my feet and have only suffered from it since ive had RA but have had carpal tunnel in my hands for a long time.

raynauds doesnt sound nice karen,is that part of RA? yeah i agree what fun we all have....not x

Hi Athena

Raynauds isnt nice, especially in this weather! Go from indoors to the car & the bottom half my fingers are red & the tops are white, they actually look dead! They go between pins & needles & numbness, its lovely!!

Anyway lol, you can get it on its own, my Dad has it, but the rheumy nurse said it runs alongside ra, so your guess is as good as mine!

Sorry to high jack the post, just wondered if anyone may have it?

hi karen

you didnt high jack the post :) we have customers come in at work with raynauds and my daughter got diagnosed with it last year,i just hope i havent passed on RA to her and that the raynauds isnt the first sign of it

i have read other threads about it so it does seem quite common alongside the RA, is it autoimmune do you know? x

Ive had nerve conduction tests but at the moment they seem to have come back clear but the doc said it would probably be a different story if I was tested again in 6 months. my GP has discussed surgery on my wrists but he said its not a particularly good success rate and with two young children to look after I cant risk having the surgery if the chances of resolving the numbness and pins and needs is so slim! Just have to plod on and deal with it but I get it throughout the day depending on what im doing rather than just at night. Has anyone been given any extra medication for it???? Ive been given Gapapentin and Amitriptyline on top of everything else. Its true though that the Docs seem to put everything down to the RA as if its just a list of extra problems we have to put up with that keeps building and building on top of the RA. Thanks for all the replies. x

hi dalton

what do they do when you have the nerve conduction test? it just says on the letter to wear loose sleaved clothing and it takes about half hour, ive read the surgery isnt very successful too.

my wrists hurt cos of RA not carpal tunnel, been getting numb hands for years prior to RA and it never caused any pain before, also if they do surgery on it but we still got active RA in our wrists wouldnt the same problem still be there as its the inflammation thats causing it.

havent been offered any medication for it but never went to the dr's about it i just mentioned it to the rheumy last month and hes referred me for the test.

This has been quite interesting to read. I had a heart problem which was treated a couple of years ago and before treatment I had 3 mini strokes.

About 4 years ago i started to get numbness in my left arm most nights. Now i have got used to it and it comes and goes.

I was diagnosed with RA earlier this year - maybe its been around for a while. I just blamed the tias, maybe i was wrong

Hi Athena, sorry for the delay. The nerve conduction test is where you have little pads put on all parts of your hands and arms and they send little electrical pulses (like a little shock) to see how your nerves react - its comes up as a reading on their screen. It hurts a tiny bit - more like a little shock but its fine.

DR Atwater, or whoever you are!! do you think we are all stupid we do not want your book!! do you think If there was a cure for RA. PA. IA, AND ALL THE OTHER ARTHRITIS, that we would be taking all these toxic meds just for the fun of it, I dont think so, do you realise how much hurt and pain you cause by saying you have a cure!!! when we all know there isnt one, you give so many people false hope with your claims. If they work for you fine, but please! please! DONT push your stupid claims onto us...

Hi Athena, Glad your nerve conduction was ok, it just feels a bit weird when they turn the dial up to shock the nerves doesnt it! My numbness and pins and needles are a but better at night with taking Amitriptyline but its not great in the day still especially if im holding a phone in that particular hand or writing etc. A couple of my fingers in my right hand are getting really bad aswell, clicking and cracking of my bones at the joint when I bend it - think Im starting to fall apart ha! Think i'll crack up sometimes with it if I dont laugh on occasions. Have you found that you've become a more agitated and less patient person with all the medication? I do and then I feel awful for being "nowty" with people after - its like as if I dont have as much tolerance anymore. x
